Italian World Cup door still open for Baggio: Trapattoni ROME, April 29 (AFP)- Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni has raised the possibility of a dramatic World Cup recall for Roberto Baggio, insisting the 'divine ponytail' has not been excluded from consideration. In the latest twist to a selection saga that has gripped Italy's media in recent weeks, Trapattoni refused to rule out Baggio from the Azzurri's squad for next month's finals in Japan and South Korea. "You can never say never," Trapattoni said when questioned on RAI television. "There is still one round of the championship to play, and we have got a friendly match against the Czech Republic. "I will be keeping an eye on Baggio," added Trapattoni, who earlier this month appeared to shoot down the veteran star's hopes of a fourth World Cup when he named his complement of attackers for the finals. However while Trapattoni suggested the door had not shut on Baggio on Monday, he nevertheless hinted the pony-tailed star would have to impress him mightily to force his way into the Italian squad. "In September or October last year he would have had a very good chance, but I've got five forwards who are all fit at my disposal and there's nothing I can do about that," Trapattoni said. Baggio made a near-miraculous recovery from a serious knee injury suffered in January, scoring twice on his return as a substitute for Brescia against Fiorentina on April 21. His performance sparked a frenzy of speculation about a possible recall, although Baggio himself last week attempted to damp down the clamour, telling fans and media to lay off Trapattoni. "There has been an upsurge in public opinion among politicians and the press which is recommending me for a place in the Italy squad for Japan," Baggion said. "I am very moved by so much affection and consideration and I hope this does not create too much of a problem for the coach. "I have known Trapattoni for many years and consider him a very thorough and honest person." 1
