Course Description:  The SIU Martial Arts Club will provide students with knowledge and training in martial arts, self-defense, and fighting tactics.  This course presents an introduction to 5 ranges of combat (weapons, kicking, punching, trapping, & grappling).  Many techniques and drills will be taught and performed in each combat range.  Students will gain strength, endurance, flexibility, self-confidence, and hopefully have a great time while doing it.  Students that prove to be irresponsible or that cannot handle the responsibility that intrinsically accompanies the training and techniques from this class will not be allowed to continue.

Attendance:  This is a 2-credit course and you must attend a minimum of 3 hours per week minimum.  You may attend any 3 hours of the 4 hours per week that the SIU Martial Arts Club meets.  If you miss more than 3 unexcused hours of absences your final grade will go down half of a letter grade per each week that you did not attend the required 3-hour minimum.  If you attend at least 3 hours of class per week, pay attention, train hard, and add your own notes to the techniques checklist, you should have no problem doing very well in this course.

Course Goals:  At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of the 5 ranges of combat that we train in.
2. A brief description of each of the martial arts, styles, or systems that we draw our techniques from.
3. Ability to perform various selected techniques from within each range of combat.
4. Familiarity with the terminology used in the techniques checklist.

Grades: 500 total possible points.  Your total points will be factored into a percentage.  Your percentage will equate to the following grade:
100 - 90/ A 89 - 80/ B 79 - 70/ C 69 - 60/ D 59- below/ F

1.  Attendance.  (200 Points).  25 points will be deducted from the total possible for each week that the student does not attend a minimum of 3 hours of class (that equates to 1/2 of a letter grade).

2.  Skill and Written tests.
Mid Term-  Monday March 3rd.  (100 Points)
Final Exam- TBA asap.  (100 Points)

3.  Homework assignments (50 Points)

4.  Extra credit (50 Points)

Required Materials:
Monday’s class from 4 till 5pm:  Bring a double weave GI.  You can find a very high quality GI in the "store" of our website.  If you don’t want to buy a GI you can wear some type of long sleeve shirt that wont rip, such as a football or hockey jersey.

Wednesday:  Bag gloves or weightlifting gloves to keep the skin on your hands from ripping as you hit pads.

Friday:  Groin cup and a mouthpiece for sparring.

You should wear something comfortable, such as shorts or jogging pants and a t-shirt.  Street shoes are not allowed on the mats.  It is highly advisable to wear wrestling shoes to train in (they will prevent many foot injuries).  It is also suggest that you bring water and a sweat towel.  Most importantly, bring an open mind, a good attitude, and a clean mouth.

A little about this class and the SIU Martial Arts Club:
We are a Mixed Martial Arts club dedicated to excelling in all ranges of combat through smart, hard, consistent training. We draw our training strategies and techniques from several martial styles and systems that have proven to be highly effective both in the street and in sport competition. We are not worried about forms, katas, belts, or ranks.
We care about what really works in the street or in the ring. We have an open mind to discover whatever works best in the real world.

A little about the instructor:  Vince is a professional No Holds Barred Fighter, a Black Belt in the World Sambo Federation, and a student of Mixed Martial Arts since 1981.  He trains with many of the best fighters and instructors in the world.
