Varadero Cuba This is one of the most famous tourist beaches in the world. Founded in 1880, and with 20 kilometres of pure white sand, it is built on a peninsula, the Punta Hicacos. It has a history of Indian occupation and pirate activity-a natural cave here bears evidence of both. Diving, sailing, fishing, and a gamut of watersports are practised here, only two hours from Havana.
A plethora of hotels, motels, cabin and villa accommodation, plus bars, cafeterias, restaurants, amusement activities and nightlife, provide everything for the family, singles or doubles holiday.
Rentals
of all forms of transport and sporting equipment, plus a regular selection of
air, road and boat tours, ensure the visitor's vacation is enjoyed to the full.
About 10 000 people live in Varadero, and most work in the tourism industry. The
Du Pont family mansion, now Las Americas Restaurant, should not be missed as an
example of 1930s opulence.
