Instructions for the Web pages.

We maintain two web pages. Intranet/skiclub (for inside the UN) and www.geocities.com/pipeline/rapids/8660 or www.geocities.com/unskiclub

You must always have a default.htm on the UN page and an index.html on the outside page. Also if you ever change the borders of any page (not necessarily the default pages), it will change the borders throughout the whole web site.

It can be very frustrating doing the web page, but great fun. Try not to put too much stuff on the web pages, as it could take time to load.

Frontpage

Both sites are being updated by FRONTPAGE. It is better to update them both with this programme, as the programme that comes with geocities is very slow.  Once you have installed FRONTPAGE, go to "file", then "Open an existing front page web", then "More webs", then type in "intranet" where it says "Select a web server or disk location". Go to "skiclub", where it says "Front page webs found at location".  Press OK.  When it asks for the name type in "unhq/skiclub" and then enter the password.

All files in the UN page must end with .htm and with the geocities programme with .html. I gave them identical names, with those for the web ending in "web" (that way you don't confuse things).  The two pages that must never be renamed are default.htm and index.html - the default pages for each of the systems.

It is better to work on the UN page first, then save it as an .html file and upload it to the geocities page. I would also save time by changing the existing files – say make Banff your France file, work with this file, then rename it. To save a file in html, go to the Editor and press on File and then "save as", and change the URL from, e.g., "france.htm" to "franceweb.html" and the title from "france" to "france web". It is important to change the title to reflect that it is an html file (and so needs html links etc).  Remember to change the links on the html page: under this system the home page is "index.html".   Because the links to the Intranet do not work on the html system and when you change from htm to html the links are not changed, you should not keep saving the same htm file as an html file - for small changes work directly with the existing html file.

How to export files to Geocities

To send files to the outside page. When you are in Frontpage Explorer (not the Editor) high-light the file you want to export and then press on "File", and then "export". I exported files to my Desktop and then erased them later.

To import them to geocities: go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/home. Then type in your Yahoo ID – UNSKICLUB and the password.  Then go to "Upload and FTP" and upload files. Find the files you want to upload through the browse feature, open them there, and then when you have chosen the files you want press "upload files". Remember you have to upload the pictures as well as the files. The pictures are stored in a separate directory "Images".   The files in html must always be in small letters with no spaces, dashes etc - just letters.  For html files, click the boxes that say that you will automatically change from htm to html and put everything in small letters (you do not need to do this for images or clipart).

For some reason, when you export files the navigation bar does not work. I had to make my own links.  I have usually placed a link to the Home Page and a Bookmark to the top of the page at the bottom of every page.

You can use the editor to edit documents once in Yahoo, but I would recommend using Frontpage and uploading the files.

Images

Sometimes you might use pictures from Clipart in Frontpage.  When you copy this file into html these embedded images will not be saved.  You will have to copy them all into the images directory on www.geocities.com.   An easy way to do it is to access the completed web page, then right click on each image and save it to Desktop and then import from Desktop into the images directory of www.geocities.com. We placed the clipart pictures in a separte directory:"littlemen". Before you remove a picture from the "Images" directory or any sub-directory, make sure that you have a replacement. Otherwise you will have a blank spaceDirectories and sub-directories in geocities should have the same name as sub-directories in the intranet - otherwise the system will not be able to locate an item in it.

To import any picture, right click on the picture, then "save image as". Save it (I put it on my desktop) and then import. Go to the Explorer in Frontpage, click on "edit" and then "Import" and then "Add file". When you have chosen the files to import click.

Links.

You can hyperlink to another page one the web site, or to any external web page. This is especially useful for giving links to ski resorts etc. I put these links on the Links page, but you can also put a link anywhere in a web page.  You can link from a piece of text that is highlighted or from an entire picture or image.  To create the link, highlight the piece to be linked, have the external web site open, then go to Editor and Press the "Create or Edit Hyperlink" button.  What you want to link should appear in the "URL" box - if not, press the little icon to the right of the box (Use your web browser to select a page").  When it does pop up, click OK.  You might want to edit the name of the link, as often the address is given.

Bookmarks. These are links within a page – you can make a link from the bottom to the top of the page, for instance, or from the bottom of a particular Newsletter to the top of the page. You make the bookmark by going into edit when in the Editor.

You can always put things on the web page and not link them so that the Committee can see them. I linked things to the commpriv.htm page, which is linked to the picture beside the Membership information on the home page.

I normally ran both programmes - intranet and geocities.com after editing - that way you can see if the links work. A link from geocities to Intranet will not work for those outside the UN.

Tables:

It is always a good idea to put your material in a table - you can add and subtract cells or rows as you go along.   Make sure that the table width is in percentage (100%) not in pixels. Go to "table", then "table properties" and where it specifies "Minimum width" put !00%. (If you put it in pixels, the final picture might fill up only half of a small screen).  Sometimes, the change from percentage to pixels is made automatically - it is then always a good idea after editing a page to make sure that the table width is 100%.

Photos

The best way to put photos on the web pages is use the zing account and put a link to that web page on the "Meet the Members" page. In that way, you do not have to fill up the system with a lot of photos. To edit the Zing account, go to www.zing.com and then type in the account member - UNSKICLUB - and the password (the same as for the web pages). You can then access the album and edit it etc, and put a link to it on the web pages.

http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293627623

is the current link to one album.  Other albums have different id numbers.

You can have lots of different albums - Cervinia, Val Thorens etc - and you would need to put a separate link to each album.

Pictures, once imported cannot be removed from "My pictures" (or
at least I don't know how to). Pictures can be moved from "My
pictures" to a specific album. To remove a picture from a particular
album, "edit" the album and click on the left icon under the
picture "click to delete image" . The picture is then sent from the album to "My pictures".  It can then be moved to another album if you want.

How to scan pictures

How to scan pictures:

Put photo in scanner, face down (top right hand corner on my machine).

Go to "Powerpaint 5"

Go to "file", "acquire image", "acquire".

The picture is then scanned.  Wait until it is finished.

Go to "type", press "Millions of colours"

Move the cursor so that the picture, or the part of the picture that you want, is put in a box.

Press "final"

The picture is then scanned again.

Go to "view", then "zoom to fit"

Go to "image", then "resample"

Reduce to 40% or so – width and height

Then "OK"

Then "file" and "save as" , "save file as type"

Save as  JPEG.bipman

Save in the highest resolution possible. (The higher the number the more disk space is needed, but the sharper the resolution - so it is better to cut out a small part if that is all you want).

Save in Drive A and then upload to the Zing system (better not to load on the web pages directly unless you are actually going to use it on a web page).
