No Ducks This Year for Woods !

Instead Ian Miller carried on from last year and brought the team home with an even more impressive display of batsmanship. Eighty one runs in 61 balls including 9 fours and 5 sixes, one of which should not have seen the ball retrieved from the bushes !! Another valiant run out from Skipper Jacobs, and a good overall bowling and fielding display kept the opposition runs down.

15/08/04 Westcott II: (Away - Scheduled Home) 40 overs
Won (Summary 5W  2L  0D)
Captain: Ross Jacobs; Toss (Negotiated - Woods XI to bat)
Woods XI 203-8 (Ian Miller 46, Richard Pereth 42*, Neil Griffin 30*)
Westcott II 116-6 (Andy Graves 2-9, Neil Saunders 2-20, Ross Jacobs 1-17)
Woods XI travelled to Westcott after agreement to change the game to an away fixture. Westcott had a young side and it was impractical for them to travel to us.

The match, scheduled to start at 1.30pm at this picturesque country ground, did not get underway until gone 2pm. Woods captain Ross Jacobs negotiated the toss and elected to ask his 10-man strong team to bat.
Progress by the upper order was slow and hindered by pace bowling from Llewelyn (aged 14) and seam bowling from Shaw P (aged 13). Alarm bells rang for Woods when first change 'youngster' Shaw M (aged 12) took Edwards (7) with his first ball and Andy Graves shortly afterwards (GD). Ian Miller looked comfortable, and set for his half century but was caught on 46. Woods were in trouble at 101 for 7, with Trevor Meadowcroft (16), Greg Crawley (0), Kevin Miller (13) and Neil Saunders (0) also back in the pavilion. Neil Griffin (30*) and Ross Jacobs steadied the ship and Richard Pereth (42*) took over from Ross (15) building a seasons highest 9th wicket partnership with Griffin of 68 runs. Woods finished their 40 overs on 203 with a wicket to spare.

Westcott were in trouble early on with a run out from Trevor. Wickets fell quickly, with only a small amount of resistance met from batsman 5 - Edwards (33). The youngsters were difficult to remove -  a credit to their technique. Wooods slowed down the pace of the bowling as darkness approached, and brothers Shaw M & P batted out the 40 overs for a total of 116-6

12/09/04 Bec Old Boys: (Home) 40 overs
Lost (Summary 5W  4L  0D)
Captain: James Lander; Toss (Won)
Bec Old Boys: 146-10 (Rob Hicks 4-49, Neil Griffin 2-6, James Lander 2-26, Neil Saunders 2-25)
Woods XI: 117-10 (Neil Griffin 52, Richard Pereth 16, Steve Edwards 15)
Woodmansterne won the toss and elected to put BOB in to bat.
Griffin and Lander kept the pressure on with tight bowling and Woods restricted BOB to 38 runs from the first half of the game. BOB then consolidated with an additional 40 runs from the 5th wicket partners, and then swung out with their remaining batsmen to reach un expected 145 by tea. Rob Hicks was one short of a five wicket haul (8o,0m,49r,4w), with 2 wickets each for Lander Griffin and Saunders
Trevor was unfortunate to lose his wicket on the second ball and scoring from then on was slow from Pereth (16) and Edwards (15). Although the skies brightened, the news for Woods did not, with more wickets falling (three more of which contributing no scores) and Woods found themselves in a similar predicament to BOB at half time, but with only 2 wickets in hand. Neil Griffin and Ron Titchenor looked like they might bring home the bacon (61 run 9th wicket partnership), but with Ron's (14) demise and then Griffin's (52 - Photo) Woods ended 30 runs short.

19/09/04 Old Suttonians: (Home) 40 overs
Won (Summary 6W  4L  0D)
Captain: Ross Jacobs; Toss (Negotiated - Woods XI to bat)
Woods XI: 182-6 (N Griffin 67*, R Jacobs 54, K Miller 20)
Old Suttonians: 35-10 (J Lander 4-16, N Griffin 4-10, S Edwards 2-4)
With the pitch damp and soggy, there were black thoughts early on that Woods might have a made a mistake by batting first, and perhaps this was the cause of some mis-read balls and inevitable departure of No 1 Edwards (1), No 4 Pereth (3) and  No 7 Ian Miller (1) ? At 38 for 4, then 79 for 5, you could be forgiven for thinking that things were going horribly wrong with N Park (16) and Jamie Goodwin (11) also packing their bags. Griffin knuckled down though and had support from Kevin Miller (20) and then Skipper Ross (54* - Photo) with his new found weapon of choice. The duo took the score on despite the long damp grass and elusive boundaries (only 9 boundaries in their 102 partnership) to help Woods' 10 men to a totally unforcasted total of 182-6.

Griffin (67* - Photo), with his 'not out', bagged his final season's average of 81.3 (7 inns 244 runs 4 NO). Prior to this Ian was heading the table with an average of 96 and savouring the rare opportunity of ending the season on a 3 figure final average for the want of finding 16 more runs without loosing his wicket !

Woods took the field suitably replete after Sandra E's tea. The treacle pudding helped bring a sticky end to 4 victims a piece for opening bowlers James Lander (4-16) and Griffin (4-10). And Edwards put the cream on top by 'ambling' in for the final 2 wickets to leave Old Sutts (Photo) with a 'trifling' 35 runs. Delroy the 1st change bowler and our last minute standby, was unfortunate not to be rewarded with a wicket in his 3 overs contribution to the match.

With the season all but finished, there is still some doubt in the batting as to who will head the stats table. However, although Griff looks safe on the bowling averages, James has only to find 5 more wickets for next to nothing in the last game, to not only reinforce his crown as leading wicket taker but to overhaul Griffin's average of 9.0.
