HANGOVER UNITED - MATCH REPORT 2003 WEEK 1 HANGOVER UTD STARTS 2003 MMSL CAMPAIGN WITH 9-0 WIN
BALTIMORE, MD – Hangover United got off to a wonderful start to the 2003 Maryland Major Soccer Campaign Sunday against REAL F.C. It was a beautiful morning in Patterson Park when the match began and it was all Hangover from the beginning. Hangover kept possession in midfield always seeming to find the open man. It wasn’t long before the scoring opportunities began to present themselves. After a few near misses, Hangover struck with the first goal in the 14th minute. Ben Hinceman found the ball at his feet after a throw in was misplayed by the defender, he turned and put it away with his right foot giving the early lead to Hangover, 1-0. Anthony Menegatti put John Jenkins through who ripped a volley that knuckled and dipped and went right through the keeper, 2-0 to Hangover. Just before halftime Hangover struck again when John Jenkins got loose on the right side and put a low cross by the keeper to the wide open Danny Gerbasi who skillfully buried into the open net. First half ended 3-0 to Hangover.
It was more of the same in the second half as Hangover were simply having there way with the Real FC side. First half keeper Jon Pitonzo put a long throw in into the 6 yd box and Ben Hinceman got up and nodded in for his second of the game. Hinceman wasn’t done causing trouble when in the 71st min he put a low ball on net after a corner kick that took a deflection off one of the defenders shin and found its way into the net. It wasn’t yet over as Hangover knocked the ball around and Jon Pitonzo found himself one-on-one with the approaching keeper, he then toe poked the ball by him into the net. Jenkins found more room in the right corner held the ball and then found Les Maynard at the far post who one-timed the ball into the net with his left foot as well. Jenkins then put another into the upper-90 for the final goal. The ref blew the whistle to end the match then at 9-0.
Hangover manager Chris King said “Now this is the way to start a season off. ‘It was de ja vu all over again’ ” referring to the 11-0 opener against Real F.C. last season. King felt for the Real F.C. side and knows the growing pains they will suffer being a new side in the MMSL. “We can’t help but see ourselves in our early years in them” King empathetically added. With this lopsided victory it put Hangover United squarely at the top of the table after Week 1. “We are looking forward to taking this momentum into next weeks match against the MSA. We are looking to stay tops, we know what we need to do this year, and this year we know we can.” MSA drew 2-2 with Peninsula United in their opener. The next match is against MSA at 12:00 PM at Patterson Park on Sunday Sept. 14th.
