Skimboarding Equipment
Slotstik Skimboards-
-light, well-constructed skimboards that come in variable shapes and sizes.
Very snappy and responsive in all types of surf. Most are made of fiberglass
and polyester resin and vacuum packed for strength and freshness, but some
are made of carbon for greater stiffness and lighter weight.. Few people
know that Slotstiks have a sub-surface solid rail structure that adds a
small element of variability. This rail can be sanded to your
desired sharpness or dullness(see figure below). I, personally ride for
Slotstik because overall, I think they ride better in East Coast surf than
any other available skimboard.
Victoria Skimboards-
- Victoria Skimboards is the oldest major skimboard manufacturer, and
with that age comes a well refined sense of skimboard design.Victoria has
a wider range of skimboards for varying skill levels and makes some of
the best top-of-the-line carbon skimboards of today. These boards are designed
for the thick surf of Laguna Beach, CA and have a heavier construction
than the carbon Slotstiks and a more flattened out rocker for longer gliding
distance. They generally cost more money and are less frequent than Slotstiks
along the East Coast.
Zap Skimboards-
- Zap Skimmers are made out of Venice Beach, FL and are popular among
Gulf Coast riders. Generally, an entry level board, Zap is starting to
produce higher quality boards that have performed well in the major East
Coast skim contests. The boards are made from varying grades of fiberglass
and resin. Zap skimboard sizes range from boards for a 50 lb beginner to
a 180 lb veteran and they are beginning to experiment with all-carbon skimboards.
