EXPOSING YOU TO MORE NEW MUSIC

INTO THE GARDEN

INTERVIEW WITH MIRANDA SEX GARDEN

STUBBLE INTERVIEW BY KEN ZEBBYN

My first time in the all-new MET CAFE in Providence attached to Lupos in the old Peerless Store. It’s a small place that was very intimate, as you could not move without brushing up to someone. The show by England's Miranda Sex Garden was a very interesting one. A mélange of sounds both natural and synthesized led by Katherine Blake on vocals, violin, and recorder. The vocals and violin of Donna McKevitt were in perfect compliment. Very tasty stuff!! I spoke to Katherine before the show.

Ken: Where is Sky Cries Mary?

KATHERINE: Well they were going to be on tour and for one reason or another they cancelled out. We met them at our gig in Seattle a year and a half ago. We are just picking up support bands as we go.

Ken: You were discovered singing a capella on the streets?

KATHERINE: I went to a music school called Purcell School of Music got there the age of 16 and met a couple of girls there singing 16th century madrigals, 3 part harmony love songs, the equivalent to pop songs today. We used to sing them on the streets for about 2-3 years on and off for street money. And then after hearing us, Barry Adamson asked us to sing on his soundtrack and that's how we got started. Sometimes I think its better there is a lot less bullshit you just get out there and do it. If people like it they throw money at you if they don't they tell you. But you don't get to travel.

Ken: Is Ben the only one that hates The Rolling Stones?

KATHERINE: Yeah well he does. I love The Rolling Stones I'm a big fan of the stuff between 1967 and 1971.

Ken: You would say you are not a typical band?

KATHERINE: It’s out there, its way out there. I play violin, saxophone and recorder as well as sing on stage. I play recorder on stage with electronic keyboards.

Ken: On the title cut of "Fairytales Of Slavery" is it a love song?

KATHERINE: Well yeah, it was written about somebody I had a relationship with. It was completely insane. And it was masochistic and suicidal. In fact the whole album is about this particular guy I'm not going out with anymore but the first night I ever slept with him I told him he was my research for the album. Its the biggest fuck up I could possibly find to write an album about, and I found him.

Ken: You are from London, right?

KATHERINE: We are from the ethers, we sort of float around in either being ethereal and mysterious. (Laughs) You got to keep your sense of humor don't you really. I mean most musicians are complete wankers; I've got to have a sense of humor traveling around the world screaming on stage in my underwear.

Ken: Where did you get your name?

KATHERINE: Somebody who used to be our agent had a list of names to pick from before we would be announced so we chose this. Lets go with that one!

Ken: Is your show theatrical?

KATHERINE: It depends on my mood, depending on how much I've drunk.

Ken: What is the band’s drink of choice?

KATHERINE: I think tequila and champagne slammers are pretty hard to beat, but they can be a bit pricey. We end up drinking shit beer really.

Ken: Final Comments

KATHERINE: Everyone who reads this has a good time, enjoy yourself spontaneously party and have good sex.
