Tried your best but still couldn't figure it out. Never fear, the answers are here: |
A SICKNESS UNTO TRUTH |
1. A statement that works is "I am a healthy knave." Neither a healthy knight nor a sick knave would say that, since it would be untrue. Nor could a healthy knave say it, since in his case it would be true. Only a sick knight could say it. |
2. "I am not a healthy knight" is a valid statement. A healthy knight wouldn't make a false statement, and if he was sick he couldn't tell the truth. Nor could a healthy knave make such a statement, since it would be untrue. Only a sick knave could. |
3. This is a bit more difficult: to say that an inhabitant is either sick or a knight (and possibly both) is tantamount to saying that he is not a healthy knave. So the problem can be restated: What statement could be made by any inhabitant except a healthy knave? Well, one that works is "I am not a sick knight." A sick knight could falsely say that, while both a sick knave and a healthy knight could truthfully say it as well. But a healthy knave, who can only lie, could not make that true statement. |
4. The solution is so simple that it is apt to be overlooked. To say that the native is either sick or a knight but not both is to say nothin more nor less than that he is either a sick knave or a heathy knight--in other words, that he tells the truth! "Two plus two equals four" would do the trick. |

5. Aaron's statements are either both true or both false. If they are both true, then Bowaine is a sick knight, which implies that Bowaine is lying. On the other hand, if Aaron's statements are both false, Bowaine is a healthy knave, in which case Bowaine is again lyin. Thus whatever Aaron may be, Bowaine's statements about Aaron are false. It thus follows from Bowaine's lies that Aaron must be a sick knight, and thus a liar himself. Aaron's false statements in turn show that Bowaine is a healthy knave.
