"The Wee County" Set in the very heart of the country, Clackmannanshire, Scotland's smallest county, has much to offer the tourist and the student of history. Known nationally as "The Wee County", the area also offers a marvellous blend of beautiful countryside with and abundance of wildlife. The name Clackmannan is derived from the word Clach, meaning stone, and Mannan, an ancient district located around the head of the River Forth associated with the sea-god Manau. Ancient worship focused on a large standing stone, the Stone of Mannan, which can be seen today at the Toolboth in Clackmannan village. The "Hillfoots" villages of Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar, which sit below the dramatic range of the Ochil Hills, have their own distinct character. From hillwalking to fishing, horse-riding to hang-gliding Clackmannanshire packs a wealth of interest for tourist and local alike. |
