Assignment No.6

This exercise will look at topics from Chapters 6 & 7, and 10.

Go to NETSCAPE.

Type this address in the OPEN box.

Once on Good's page, click on Maps and then click on Historical Maps. Then, click on Revolutionary Georgia. Click on Map 1799-A New and Accurate Map of Province of Georgia.

1. What is this a map of and if you're from this state, is your county/city on it?
Print out a copy. May not look just like what's on your screen, but that's ok. Don't worry.
Click BACK. Click on Union and Expansion. Click on Map 1799 Southern Map of United States.
2. Describe what you see here. Explain why population is mostly confined east of the Appalachians Print a copy.
Click BACK. Click Map 1813 Southern Section of the United States .
3. What's different here compared to the above map
4. Comment about the usefulness of maps found on the Historical Maps Web Pages
5. Some more critical thinking-- why do you think states in the East are small compared to the states in the West? Explain.

We are going to take a ride through Good's former stomping grounds in PA. Click on General Information. Click on Turnpike History.
6. How long was the first turnpike and what was it named?
7. When was it established and what was it made of?
8. Why did they build it? Cite examples and briefly explain the type terrain of the area/region.
9. What happened to the turnpike in the next decade or two?
10. Who decided to build a railroad through and what happened to him?
11. When was the Penna. Turnpike finally opened?
12. For Chapter 7, flip through the text and select a topic. You might pick whaling, fisheries, clipper ships, slave trade, hydrographers like Capt. Cook, Chabert, etc., U.S. trade with Europe, port cities like Savannah, Charleston, Nantucket, New York, Boston, Triangular trade, Gulf Stream, Grand Banks, salt, Syracuse, NY, cod fish, right whale, sturgeon, shad, salmon, sailing ships, etc. Find two(2) sites about your topic by doing a Netsearch. Then, for all 2, give the address, summarize them, and relate them to class.
13. CLICK ON HISTORIAL GEOGRAPHY.Click on Estill Blockhouse Dedication and answer the following questions.Question deals with Chapter 10.

1. Where is the Estill Blockhouse?
2. Go down through the images to you see photography of both sides of the historical marker. Who was Issac Estill?
3. From the sign and photographs that follow describe the Estill Blokchouse?
4. From the signs and photographs of the place and what you know express your thoughts about the Appalachian Frontier in 1773 (rember the Proclamation of 1763?)
