Assignment #3 is to go into some of the powerful new search engines on the web to expose you to the search engines by doing a simple exercise by going to seven (7) searches relating to the chapter on North Africa/SW Asia.

-Go to NETSEARCH
On the screen will come up a bunch of search engines like Lycos, Infoseek, Hot Bot, Alta Vista,
Excite, Yahoo, Magellan, Web Crawler and a bunch more.
-Choose a topic from Chapter 6 of your text called North Africa/Southwest
Africa: The Energy of Islam and go to one of the search engines or several.
-Choose seven (7) sites that deal with North Africa/Southwest Asia. You can
go to specific countries (Israel, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Cyprus,
Kazakstan,Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc. etc.; region (North
Africa, SW Asia, Mesopotamia, Maghreb, Middle East, Sahel,etc.); topic
(Arab, Islam, Schistosomiasis, irrigation, enosis, Judaism,desert, oasis, camels, arid, etc. etc.); specific location (Persian Gulf, Sinai Peninsula,
Aswan Dam, Jordan River, Nile River, Suez Canal, Atlas Mountains, Zagros
Mountains, Tigris River, Khyber Pass, Wakhan Corridor, Dead Sea, Sea of
Galilee, Golan Heights, Strait of Gibraltar, Sinai, Red Sea, Aozou Strip,
Aral Sea,etc. etc.); cities (Cairo, Damascus, Jerusalem, Tripoli, Mecca,
Jericho, Baghdad, Kuwait City, Tripoli, Casablanca, etc. etc.); people
(Christ, Mohammed, Saddam Hussein, Allah, Gaddafi, Ataturk,etc.); general
(Middle East Peace Talks, Middle East war, Palestians, terrorism,OPEC, oil,
desertification (land degradation), West Bank of Jordan River, Ataturk,
Cyprus Dispute, Bible, Koran, Ramadan, Kurds, Kurdistan, Palestinians,
Aramco, Hezbollah, theocracy, Zoroastrian, Qanat, Intifada, etc.) Choose one of the
above topics or any other topics not on the list that deal with North
Africa/Southwest Asia. Might want to do a report on it
in some other class. You can choose all seven sites from one topic or jump
around seven different topics.
-Do the following three (3) things with the seven (7) sites you visited:
(1) Title of site and http # or any other identifying citation. In the
future you'll be doing more and more papers, reports, projects, etc. using the INTERNET and need to give proper credit.
(2) Very briefly summarize what you found at the site.
(3) relate topics to things we discussed in class.
(4) Give opinion of article--good, bad, why, like it, not like it,
over-all reaction, etc. Use a rating scale of 1=Outstanding, a must see; 2=very good, well above average; 3=helpful, functional; 4=would seldom use, nothing special; 5=wouldn't recommend under any circumstance.
