Barred tails or  bar codes

In 2000, we took part for the second time in the Christmas bird count. Unlike last year, it was not snowing but it was weather for birds with barcodes on their tails, having been below –30oC for three weeks prior.

In our area, which was almost the same as last year but slightly larger, we saw more birds but only half as many types of birds. There was a flock of at least 3000 Bohemian Waxwings on the edge of the area. Here is the list:

1 Raven (eating a road kill sandwich)

2000 Bohemian waxwings. (mostly in the flock mentioned above, but three hundred in another flock about a mile away)

3 Crows (individuals doing not much in particular and doing it very well)

1 Magpie (raiding discarded food behind the ice rink)

5 Chickadees (at someone elses bird table)

1 Bluejay (we watched for a few minutes, flying between the tops of trees.)

15 House sparrows. (at two bird tables, neither of them ours)
