First, the study site -- it consisted of two strips of land between cow pastures (fenced on each side). As you can see in this somewhat dark photo, the drifts of last year's knapweed pile up on the fences at either side.
One of the best parts of the project was the view! Note the cheat-grass in the lower left corner and the knapweed in the lower right. This is the rather weedy rangeland (cow pasture) that bordered the site on its south side.
Here is a color and a black and white photo comparing the biomass and species composition of a control and a treated plot. The control is in the back (inside the quadrat) and is predominantly cheat-grass and Japanese brome. The carbon-added plot is in the front and is largely Western wheatgrass with some cheat-grass along the right edge. The biomass amount is much larger in the control plot. This might not be visible from these images, but it is very visible in the original photos.
