PP3 log

Sunday 12 January 1997 - Trollheim is evicted.

Contractors aided by Bailiffs may contravene the 1992 badger act in unlicensed destruction of badger setts, during clearance of the new A30. The law is about to be broken and they don't care!

They came in at about 3:00 a.m. We had plenty of warning and were trying to work out if it was Trollheim or Fairmile. We got confirmation Trollheim was being surrounded. I gave the shout over the CB and the intercom. I let off my specially prepared 2-tone squeal alarm. I left the ambulance to suss out some torchlights and bumped into two T.S.G in full riot gear. They told me to stand outside the ambulance. I told them who I was, and what I was doing. They allowed me to use the intercom to see if everyone was O.K., everyone was. They then allowed me to use the CB to tell the outside world everything was O.K. After that they prevented me from using the CB but I managed to get the odd message out. I had two police most of the time standing outside my back door.

At 4:55 screaming was heard through the intercom, it was lock-on no.6 (the tree- stump bunker (Fort Knox)) which contained three females. One was screaming "you're hurting me." The police refused to let me ask if they were alright.

At 4:57 diggers were being brought too close to the site. I sent a message to the sheriff about the high risk of cave-ins, in the tunnels due to the heavy machinery, but he ignored my warnings.

At 5:02 someone in 'The Well" {a deep shaft of about 25 ft with 3 ft of concrete in the bottom as a lock-on} was unwell. The bailiffs told 3 people he had taken an overdose and was locked on. Consequently three people thought things had gone too far and unlocked themselves after being told they would not be arrested. All three were arrested for obstructing the Sheriff. The 'overdose' casualty turned out to be merely sleeping and was fine.

At 6:15 there were still seventeen people locked on

Between 7-8:00 the main tunnel was entered. At first they forcefully opened the locked door at the entrance to the tunnel which was clearly marked as 'attached to shoring' with a crowbar. Thus causing shoring to become dislodged and sand to fall. The occupants had previously spent time explaining who they were and what they were doing. They attempted to compromise by asking the bailiff to talk to them and strike a deal that if the tunnel was not breached they would come up peacefully after two hours. The bailiffs decided to take the unsafe option and evict the protesters.

Once the door had been removed the ventilation system that had been installed by us was next in line.

With no clean air supply, the potholer bailiff {from the peak district}decided to forcefully remove two of the protesters who claimed to be locked on, by dragging them into the first section of the tunnel, now cleared of all the ventilation piping and fans, rolling them onto their backs and handcuffing them. They were then pulled to the surface through many tight gaps and openings by a 15 ft rope attached to their handcuffs. They were not locked on.

The bailiff had successfully used up all of the oxygen by being so forceful and causing everyone to breathe heavily.

He saw a third protester who also claimed to be locked on at the far end.

The bailiff claimed he was exhausted from being awake for 24 hours and he was finding it hard to breathe and returned to the surface for a 5 minute break, leaving the protester without air.

I heard the protester asking me for air and I tried to contact the under-sheriff to inform him of the situation but I was told everything was under control, a blatant lie.

The potholer bailiff returned into the tunnel {still cloudy from condensation} and moved onto the third protester.

A half boarded wall of timber blocking half of the tunnel was kicked out causing shoring again to be dislodged and large chunks of the ceiling began to fall. All of the timber was removed from the tunnel along with all of the water and bedding.

A noose was tied around the curled up protesters feet and he was stretched on a rope in order for the bailiff to clamber over the top of him to check he was locked-on. He was. At this point the intercom speaker was broken.

The bailiff swore and left the tunnel leaving the protester still being pulled on by a taut rope. Approximately every 10 minutes the rope was yanked to make sure he was still there.

A cave and rescue specialist brought in to monitor the 'overdose' casualty was asked to look into the tunnel and assess the situation. He entered the tunnel and instantly described the bailiffs 'as animals'.

He ordered the instant installation of intercoms, compressed air and untied the protester's feet. After a long chat the protester agreed to unlock and leave the tunnel on the condition he was not arrested.

At this point there were only two protesters left on site.

The tunneler was escorted off site and not arrested, leaving one protester on site.

At 9:51 the police asked me to leave and I did so.

The eviction at Fort Trollheim was Britain's first tunnel eviction.

The Trolls were impeccably behaved and there was absolutely no incidence of violence.

Troll engineering proved to live up to its high standard and was the only factor that saved lives.

If the under-sheriff and his not-so merry men use the same tactics as were used at Trollheim on the ancient muddy warrens of Fairmile. SOMEONE WILL DIE!

Thursday 23 January 1997 - Fairmile kicks off.

They came into Fairmile at 9.40pm police all over the place we spotted them sent out arooga rumour. As ever, one person caught out having a dump.

Have got a police communications wagon outside my door - really good photo. Their wagons covered in aerials.

People down Big Mama are all O.K. and in good spirits. They have plenty of food and water and are behind three doors. People are up trees, not as many as there could have been. We have wire communications with Big Mama and CB contact with FOXTROT YOGHURT and BAY WATCH.

10.30pm 3 climbers up the beech trees by the badger sett.

10.34pm first arrest.

10.45pm walkways being cut.

11.02pm a girl has fallen about 6 foot she was O.K. but very upset.

11.06pm generator fumes going down tunnel. We passed the message on to the sheriff and the generator was moved. They will be pumping air down the tunnels and monitoring oxygen levels. I have been informed that they won't be touching anything on the ground until morning.

12.05am they have sealed the camp. Have met the guys going down and building the shoring. Their main concern is safety.

12.35am everything O.K. Early in the morning a megaphone was used to emit a loud squeaking noise down the tunnel this woke the people in the tunnel. It stopped after a short time.

Friday 24 January 1997

2.00am there are 3 people in the big oak one person is handcuffed in an oil drum filled with concrete locked on.

4.10am PP3 was subjected to a full on search by the police.

6.57am 4 men and one woman in the oak.

8.30am caver going down tunnel. 9.20am climbers going up trees. 11.35am the cavers are going to square off the tunnel by the door before the shoring is put in.

11.40am tripod thing erected above shaft of Big Mama. Block and tackle attached with caving rope through pulley.

11.57am generator started near shaft.

12.15am they put up a wooden fence and are now laying down razor wire. We thought razor wire was illegal, but this stuff isn't real razor wire just looks like it.

12.35pm radar thing being used around lock ons very sensitive and accurate. We are a bit worried about this machine as the radiation given off by it is very dangerous. We're looking into it. They have spent hours to dismantle the tyre lock-on, no one was in it. At one point a bailiff tried it for size. A stretch has been cut through between the beech under the cargo net to the back copse.

12.45pm the sheriff's rep, doctor and potholer came to check on situation in tunnels. They also asked about a possible extra tunnel they are pumping air into. The potholers are mine rescue. They seem very reasonable and willing to help they are also honest, unlike the sheriff and his men. It was these guys who went down the Trollheim tunnels after the bailiffs had been in, and insisted that air and communications were re- installed. These guys are not going to take anyone out all they are doing is making the tunnels safe. They also told us that the bailiffs who tied up the person in the Troll tunnels and stretched them out, were given a serious telling off. The sheriff's man is still trying to say it didn't happen. Maybe one day we'll play him the tape.

1:00pm single line walkway between Darren's tree and the beech is re-connected. Yip Yip.

1:05pm the abyss is breached.

1:25pm 5 or 6 climbers at bottom of beech.

1:30pm climbers half way up.

1:31pm at base of battle platform

1:34pm climbing up sides

1:42pm climbers up top of tree. One person locked on in the inner sanctum in the beech.

1.47pm climbers at top of tree talking to protesters, being very friendly. I think that they have thought a lot about keeping things calm and gone for the approach of being nice to people. Everyone is being extremely fluffy. They only brought one rope with them so have to go back down and get another.

2.15 Baywatch gone off air.

2.20pm flags lowered from beech.

2.45pm pot holers and their camera crew going down tunnel. They're having a meeting on the surface.

2.55pm potholers spotted digging to the left of the tunnel. They are levelling the floor for their table thing. We have given interviews to the media.

3.40pm the persons lock-on stash in the beech has been removed. The table thing is level.

3.49pm equipment by the tunnels includes : 2 engine driven pumps with air tanks, 1 generator, light stand, TV connected to cables running to the shaft, pulley on tripod with expensive white caving rope, several air pipes connected to tunnel pipes, loads of boxes and cables. The table is for bits of paper and T.V. The pulley is for pulling bits of shoring in and out.

4.00pm 9 people still up trees. 5 people down Big Mama. The person locked on in the oak was locked on for 37 hours and 20 minutes. We tried negotiating soup to be taken to her last night because she was cold. Turned into a right palaver. Maybe one day we'll write a book about the negotiations we had with the police negotiators. Here is a summary.

THE OJ SAGA 10.00pm

OJ on lock on in oak, needs hot "cup a soup" as she is cold. Liason have said they will see what they can do. She can still move her hands but the handcuffs are tight.

10.02pm police liason install intercom link between PP3 and their own communications van outside. A very techno piece of tat indeed. The intercom works by keeping your finger on the button on the side, this will then ring next door and will be picked up by the tripple B's Bob,Brian and Bruce. There is no need to remove your finger from the button.

10.35pm police liason has asked that a protester should come down from the trees in exchange for a flask of hot soup, at this point OJ who had been locked on for over 24 hours in the high branches of the oak tree said she'd rather die of hyperthermia than create that situation.

11.35pm still trying to resolve the situation with OJ possibly getting somewhere. Talking to the police in PP3 at present, all for a flask of soup.

11.45pm asking for a medic to assess situation.

11.55pm police causing loads of hassle and bother.

12.05pm After PP3 explained that we would drop it, and that the person would get ill from hyperthermia, they reversed their decision. A flask was sent up to OJ at 12.12am containing hot mushroom soup and a sneaky pouch of tobacco.

Saturday 25 January 1997

Eviction at Fairmile continues.
10.27am OJ being chipped out of lock-on, in oak.
Last night 8 people climbed up an off route tree that was totally cut off from the main camp. The police thought it was a media stunt and just stood around. They then realised that a line of fishing wire which had been set up before the eviction was being used to pull a length of polyprop from the tree to one inside the cordon. The single line walkway was in place. The police tried desperately to cut the line before anyone could get across and succeeded leaving 8 people up the off route tree. A near success. The 8 people were arrested the next day.
10.28 climbers start on beech.
10.35 Someone handcuffed to beech.
10.55 OJ has been taken out and handcuffs cut. She's now off to hospital to be checked over. OJ holds the record for being locked on 37 hours and 20 minutes. She's O.K. Medics have been keeping a close eye on her condition.
11.00am. Big Mama report that the potholers are talking to the press about specific details of tunnel leaked by a protester.
11.03am. OJ down from tree.
11.05am Quercus junction lock being hit.
11.06am. First section of Big Mama's entrance shaft has now been shored.
11.10am. OJ put into ambulance and off to hospital. Someone's gone with her.
11.23 am. Tik out of oak.
11.25am 16-17 arrests so far.
11.26am OJ was not arrested.
11.44am. Two people who were going to chat to police about badgers and then go to hospital to check on OJ have been arrested for breaking bail. No lift for OJ.
12.04pm 1 locked-on in oak, 1 locked-on in beech, 2 people locked--on in back copse. 12.10pm Big Mama told by potholers they're going to shore all the way along. 12.35pm Oak lock-on taken out.
12.52pm We have decided to only allow media interviews with tunnel people to the media who will publish Big Mama's list of demands.
1.06pm People up trees in back copse.
1.35pm Potholers are installing their own intercom into Big Mama.
1.40pm Report of a dead badger found near Trollheim.
1.40pm Chainsaw men returned from lunch.
1.50pm Tripple B's {police liason} are unreeling an intercom cable across churchyard. Told them to respect the dead and asked them not to walk over graves.
1.55pm Police have asked Big Mama if they can install intercom. Big Mama turned down the offer saying they could speak through PP3.
1.50pm Person locked-on in beech was chipped out after 3 hours. He escaped and climbed up the tree and took the climbers belay lines with him.
2.15pm Streaker runs across site.
2.26pm Sounds like they're cutting barbed wire on the first door in Big Mama.
2.43pm Big Mama request their families be contacted and told that every one is O.K.
2.59pm Geezer in beech has come down tree and locked-on again.
3.25pm It looks like they're taking out the first door in Big Mama.
3.26pm Large drill being used on lock-on in beech. The Badger Guardians will visit tomorrow to check on badger sett.
3.35pm Big Mama report person on other side of door is getting impatient.
3.23pm We've been told that all personal possessions will be placed on the track in-between two blue cars.
4.11pm Geezer in beech has been cut out and brought down.
4.24pm 5 people up trees 5 down Big Mama. All the trees are still standing. Loads of people outside cordon. Still loads of custard {yellow jackets}.
4.30pm Bailiffs chiselling at steel plate on Big Mama's door.
5.45pm Big Mama's door removed. Revealing 2 more doors and very dodgy shoring. They're going to make sure they shore all the tunnel as they move along.
25/1/96 Saturday
7.10pm All work in Big Mama has now stopped and the tunnel night shift have taken over monitoring ventilation from the surface. We asked if the intercom in Das Bunker could be given to people in Big Mama. Unfortunately Das Bunker has been stripped and we can't locate the unit.
10.57pm The Tripple B's came in saying that Big Mama were requesting hot drinks not for medical reasons. We confirmed this with Big Mama. BBB's gone off.
11.05pm BBB's have gone up to site to confirm with bosses. Someone's glasses were found by climbers and returned. They have been very good with people's possessions and returning things including stuff that we really wouldn't expect them to return. The police have been very careful to safeguard people's property.
11.15pm Police seem to be building up outside ambulance. BBB's wouldn't explain what was going on.
11.32pm P.C Eden has threatened mini eviction on Danni unless he moves his van. 11.35 PP3 has asked for a solicitor to be called on standby because of the van saga. Confirmation that no-one was arrested at last night's tree-pixie action.
11.43pm Danni has come down with two huge pots of food, that are heating up at the moment. The food is for the hungry and homeless people after the eviction. There are also two small babies with them.
11.58 P.C. Eden has said that if he does not move at some point tonight, they will send in the T.A.G {Tactical Assault Group} to remove him. He will receive a two minute warning from the sheriff.
12.45pm Tip off given for half an hour until the Danni eviction.
1.10am T.A.G turn up to move Danni. Police returned to talk about flask of tea. 1.12am Danni moved.
3.00 Police asking people to move from outside the cordon. Pushing people around like sheep. If they don't comply they are liable for arrest. There has been 1 arrest. Police are moving people to outside a newly erected ticker-tape cordon.
3.13am Police form a line along new ticker-tape cordon. Creating a police cordon. 3.13 Police tampering with PP3s wire aerial.
3.40 Lizzie evicted from outside the badger sett. No-one is there to observe badger sett. In return for Lizzie's safe release, everyone must now move down to PP3 {*}. 4.17am P.C Eden has agreed with the 'bronze commander' that a safe box will be created to accommodate the confused refugees. So everyone must now move to safe box in field. Now trying to organise to light a fire to warm people up.
4.30 Fire still not been sorted.
4.40 Refugees heading for office.
7.00 Police have asked PP3 to leave the land because {*}he had too many visitors the night before. The intercom and the Dictaphone are forced out into the muddy field, open to the elements. The technician who was the only person who knew how to fix it in case of fault or emergency, had just been kicked off site and told that if he returned he would be arrested.
OH NO!!! PP3 has got a press conference to organise for 9.00 before the hoards of press vultures arrive and all we have is a biscuit tin lid in a field with an intercom unit on it!!! We've only had two hours sleep.
9.35. We set the intercom up outside and the press conference went ahead as planned. Before pulling off PP3 explained to the sheriff that it was a bad idea moving PP3 from the site. This action would damage trust and potentially endanger life. PP3 explained to the sheriff if anything happened to the people down Big Mama then he would be totally responsible. Big Mama's demands were read out in front of all of the world's media. Questions were asked to the people down Big Mama. After the conference, the police asked for the intercom to be moved nearer to the cordon, as we were blocking a public footpath. The intercom was moved and then cut by the forces of darkness. All communication has been severed and another agreement which we reached at the safety meeting with the under sheriff has been broken. We now have no contact with people underground. We are very scared for the people down Big Mama. PP3 has moved to the paint ball centre at the west side of Troll land.
11.00am sheriff is holding a press conference. Have already had a visit from the police who informed me I could be arrested. I decided to remain close to site in case I was needed. Press releases went out simultaneously with the press conference.
11.05am The sheriff gave his answer to the demands 'totally unacceptable and I am in no position to negotiate.' Why not? and if not then speak to someone who can! It's not too much to ask.
3.15pm Oxygen supply for tunnel failed. Pump unit conked out, alarm went off.
3.17 They look like they're replacing it with another unit.
4.30pm Ed speaks to tunnels over police intercom. Everyone sounds fine - request for tobacco and a lighter, request is refused. Big Mama are refusing to speak to the police. They are past second door but haven't shored anything yet. Ed to be allowed further communication in the morning.

Monday 27 January 1997

6.30pm John taken out of tunnel. They grabbed him as he was reading an article in the Guardian
10.00pm Animal cut out of lock-on. The press went potty over Animal. With people still down the tunnel, debate sprang up all over the world. Donations started coming in. People have begun to listen. Whether any of this debate will change transport policy is debatable. A Tory MP is criticised for making facist remarks like 'they should CS gas people down the tunnels' {Dr. Adrian Rodgers {Exeter Tory M.P}.} The effect of CS gas in confined spaces is such that if they do do this the people would not be able to come out of the tunnel quickly enough and would probably die of asfixiation. This MP is proposing murder. The only violence that was offered on the whole eviction was stated by this man!!!

Thursday 30 January 1997

11.40am Dave has come out of tunnel.
3.30pm Ian came out of tunnel, both O.K. and in good health. Charged with section 10, obstructing the sheriff.
8.40pm Swampy has come out of the tunnel to a swarm of press. He looked great, better than I've seen him for a long time. The tunnel was occupied for 6 days and 23 hours. Swampy made a massive statement. Media coverage has been excellent. They have been discussing DBFO's. It is in the public's consciousness. People are talking about the issues.
Big YIP to the Big Mama posse and loads of respect.
Big YIP to everyone who kept an eye on the tunnel entrance and monitored things on the ground.
Big Yip to everyone sticking to the vows of non violent direct action.
Big Yip to all of the public who supported us in all that we did. We got our point across.

31/1/1997
2.55pm Switched off CB.
PP3 is now standing down from RED ALERT.

Time to start thinking about the next one!!!!
