29.03.2001 Man's influence on the Danube Delta
Man's influence on the Danube Delta
Untill about four decades the Danube Delta was one of the least man influenced territories given its inaccessibility and its hostility for permanent living. The few settlements were inhabited almost exclusively by fishers and the pieces of solid land were used for grazing. But since more than four decades, the consequences of the people's coming here are easy to remark and man's influence on the delta territory increased every year. During the last four decades man modified the Delta more than he did before. These considerable modifications in the biotopes of the Delta were principally determinated by the setting up of a series of industrial units, by the extension of those allready existing, by the exploitation of rush, by dyking and by channel works. The increased presence of the people-workers, tourists, hunters, sportive fishers- added to the local population who increased too, contributed to great changes in the biotopes of the Delta and implicitely in the avifauna. Almost all the changes due to the man's presence were and still are negative. His simple presence could mean a lot for many species, that went away from his way. These last years we face the problem of the arrangement of some Delta territories in order to increase the economical efficiency of this area and that in three directions: agriculture, fish breeding and forestry. Considering the influence that all these changes wiil have on Delta landscape it is necessary to prevent the destruction of this valuable avifauna. So, an inventory (a live stock) of all the birds from the delta is necessary during the four seasons; also, some lists are necessary to be elaborated with the species in jeopardy to disappear or in alarming decrement as well as a numerical estimation of all the individuals of each brooding species. Depending on these lists the necessary measures will be elaborated to preserve the avi fauna of the Danube Delta from decrease or worse, from extinction.
