About the Institute for Rivers Ecosystems
The Institute for River Ecosystems was chartered in 1991 as a non-profit organization within the Humboldt State University Foundation. The goal of the Institute is to provide scientific guidance for preservation and management of river ecosystems. This goal is met through research, education, and communication. Research directed by the Institute for River Ecosystems is inter-disciplinary and focuses on subjects including life history patterns of anadromous salmonids, the role of estuaries in anadromous fish life histories, identifying critical riparian and aquatic habitat and communities, evaluating environmental impacts of dams, river management and restoration, and interrelationships between fluvial geomorphology and river ecology.
