GREENHOUSE TOURS
Your host: Susan Lindstedt
Northeast Oregon
My plantroom is a 6' x 20' west-facing sunporch. Available natural light is supplemented with a 430W H.I.D. lamp and 2 double 4' fluorescent fixtures.
The climate here in the high NE corner of Oregon is similar to that of the Rocky Mtns. My challenges include extreme temperatures and aridity. The long, very cold winters, and hot dry summers are not entirely without advantage for an orchid grower. There's near magic in the quality of light reflected into the plantroom from the snow outside on a bright winter day. Summer nights almost always dip into the low 60s (F), even after the hottest triple-digit July day, giving plants a temperature differential that sets bloom, and refreshes weary Masdevalias and Odontoglossums.
Most of my ~100 plants grow in the cool to intermediate range. I run two household humidifiers placed in front of strongly blowing fans. I also mist or damp down my growing area most mornings. A cement floor with drains makes misting and watering with a hose easy.
