Carol, I'm here at 9EST. Probably should have made it 8 Eastern, wouldn't keep me up as late! [You were here as early as possible, Bruce -- 8CDT/9EDT...mlg]
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Same goes for me, Bruce, but the west coast people wouldn't like it. I saw you out at J.E.M. a few weeks ago but didn't know you were the new manager, congratulations!
Bruceide
Carol, I have been there for about 6 months, but will be leaving shortly to take a position with Palm Beach County.
PaphioDePaphio
Bruce: I wrote an Email to JEM last night... asking about the parents of Phrag. Grandiflora... but have not gotten the reply yet.. maybe you can help me...Phrag. Grandiflora is one of the plants listed on J.E.M.'s catalog on the web site.
Bruceide
PaphDePaphio, a check of the RHS CD did not turn up a Phrag. Grandiflora.
121133ellen
I have a Cycnodes Wine Delight from JEM which is the envy of my orchid society.
[Cycd. Wine Delight 'J.E.M.', FCC/AOS...mlg]
PaphioDePaphio
ellen: I have seen that plant with an FCC... it was so pretty...
marilyninOttawa
Bruce. Could you tell us something about trends in Catasetum hybridization?
Bruceide
marilyn, that appears to be going in the direction of dark colors along the lines of Wine Delight and another dark cross that is now available. Also crossing with Cycnoches and others to try and increase the flower life, by getting rid of the triggers from the catasetum parents.
Evlyn
When the trigger is released--does the flower die?
Bruceide
marilyn, there are several fairly new species from South America that have recently become available, they are being worked into the breeding also for the features they offer.
arilyninOttawa
Bruce, if one uses the Cycnoches as the seed parent, does this stifle the trigger mechanism even in the first generation?
Evlyn
What features do they offer?
Bruceide
Evlyn, I'm not fully versed on all the new species but I gather they are quite large and are nicely colored. We have just taken several out of compots and are growing them on.
marilyninOttawa
Bruce, what is your opinion of the minimum temperature that Catasetums should be exposed to?
Bruceide
Marilyn, in the nursery they are grown with the cattleyas and exposed to about the same temperatures. I don't think I'd go much below 50F to be safe.
marilyninOttawa
Bruce, I agree with 50F (10C). That seems to be the point at which leaf damage results in those black/brown spots.
121133ellen
Bruce, what can I do to protect my leaves on the Wine Delight and others. They seem to get black spots so easily.
bmtorchids (Barbara from California)
Bruce, I use RO water for misting every day, I think that's where my black spots on my plants leaves came from.
JCY8S (John in Arcadia CA)
Bruce - what causes male then female flowers to form? Is it the amount of light at a particular time?
Evlyn
I missed any response on the trigger question.
121133ellen
Bruce, how about some info on how to keep them after they bloom.
drroot
Hello all. Had to make an effort to get here knowing the speaker had Maine connections. Bruce I assume you were stationed at Loring? Did you have any experience growing in Maine? I am finding that I can grow more types than I thought I would.
Bruceide
drroot, I didn't try growing orchids while I was at Loring, but I would think that you would have a fairly wide selection you can grow, particularly with lights.
drroot
Bruce I have been growing for about 3 years now and have had success even with vandas and dendrobiums. I am on the coast near New Brunswick border but have a daughter in school in Limestone.
marylois
Bruce, tell us about The Orchid ReSource.
Bruceide
Lois, The Orchid ReSource is the website I am co-running. It was designed for beginners and has culture information, a glossary, a list of all the registered genera (Current to the last issue of Orchids with a list in it). The picture book features pictures of orchid species, with where they are found and culture information.

prankster d (Susan from Oregon)
Bruce, Do you know about Paphinias? Any tips for me? I've got a P. cristata and I don't want to do it harm.
bmtorchids (Barbara from California)
Susan, where did you get your Paphinia?
prankster d (Susan from Oregon)
Barb, I got Paphinia from World of Orchids (Miami). It was one of their August specials!
graphicgreg (photog in WPB)
Susan, Paphinia are low altituide plants hence prefer temps on the warm side, consistent moisture, lower light.
runnerRick (Rick in Dayton, Ohio (Brrr) Diablo View OS, AOS)
Susan, bet you have the perfect place for those Paphinias, even some snow...
prankster d (Susan from Oregon)
Greg, thanks. I've managed to keep a Stanhope fairly happy. Does a Paphinia want more water? Less light than my Stanhope?
graphicgreg (photog in WPB)
Susan, I would think Stanhopea conditions should be just about right. Have you flowered it yet? If not, you are in for a treat.
prankster d (Susan from Oregon)
Greg, only had it a short time. Can't wait for bloom! Was attracted to Paphinia when I saw the pic in Prigeon's encyclopedia.
What time a year does Paphinia cristata usually make bloom?
graphicgreg (photog in WPB)
Spring, Susan.
Bruceide
Paphinia's are great, large flowers on small plants.
marylois
Think I missed the response on the male/female Ctsm flowers?????
Bruceide
Lois, I think I missed the question, sorry.
JCY8S (John in Arcadia CA)
Bruce, I asked: ...what causes male then female flowers to form? Is it the amount of light at a particular time?
marylois
Yes, it was asked - what causes the male or female flowers to appear? Is there any way to treat the plant to predespose it to one kind of flowering or the other? Evlyn - please restate the triggering question - wasn't it a question whether mating with Cyc overcame the trigger effect in progeny????
Bruceide
JCY8S, That's what I had always heard and read, but in the greenhouse we have some plants with male flowers and some with female right next to each other. (Different species, so still maybe light).
121133ellen
Bruce, living in NY makes growing them more difficult because of the heat. What is the minimum required temp?
Bruceide
Ellen, minimum temperatures for which orchids? Some can easily take mid 40's F. Most, I would say, around 50F.
121133ellen
I was talking about temps for Cynodes, Ctsm. and Mormodes.
Bruceide
ellen, minimum temps for that group is about 50F winter nights.
Evlyn
When the trigger is released--does the flower die?
Bruceide
Evlyn, Yes, releasing the trigger shoots out the pollen and the flower fairly quickly fades.
runnerRick (Rick in Dayton, Ohio (Brrr) Diablo View OS, AOS)
Ellen, if you are referring to the catesetums when you ask if the flower dies, the answer is yes. I have a tenebrossum in bloom right now and it will only last a short time. If it shoots its pollenia, the time will be even shorter.
Evlyn
About how long would the flower stay open it I didn't release the trigger?? I had fun showing it off to non orchid growers last year--bad idea.
JCY8S (John in Arcadia CA)
Evyln - my flowers vary as to staying power. It depends on your conditions, I think.
runnerRick (Rick in Dayton, Ohio (Brrr) Diablo View OS, AOS)
Evlyn, mine only lasted about 10 days last year, but that was in the house. This year in the GH, I'm hoping for more, (maybe 14, 18 days)
graphicgreg (photog in WPB)
Evlyn, the idea is to HOLD the Catasetum for the non-orchid grower to smell, then move it just enough so the trigger contacts the unsuspecting nose...the Pinocchio effect!
Bruceide
Evlyn, probably not more than a few days to a week. We had one open at the nursery in a protected location and it was still gone in a week or so.
runnerRick (Rick in Dayton, Ohio (Brrr) Diablo View OS, AOS)
Evlyn, Bruce is probably more correct. It may have been shorter than 10 days. All that I remember is that it was SHORT, and somewhere in the week or thereabouts timeframe.
121133ellen
Can I get some tips on blooming stanhopeas. Mine grow like crazy in their baskets but no flowers.
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
Hey, Bruce, there was a question in the OLD about orchids that will take heinous heat and desiccating conditions. Any suggestions?
Bruceide
AJHicks, Maybe the Variegata Oncidiums (not oncidiums any more though) Tolumnia, I think. They like lots of light and need to dry well.
drroot
Bruce are those the 'Equitant' Oncidiums? [Yes, aka variegata oncidiums. See Ed Wright's discourse on "equitant" oncidiums...mlg]
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
We have a fellow just outside of Albuquerque who raises cool-growing odontoglossum-group orchids and miltonias; he has an entire WALL filled with HCC's and AM's, and one FCC to his name (first I've ever seen in a home, I admit). Two greenhouses, both about 1/4 the size of my home (which is tiny enough!). Humidity is fixed with evaporative coolers in the summer.
prankster d (Susan from the Northern edge of the Great Basin)
AJH. Boy, Id like to swap war stories with THAT guy!
bmtorchids (Barbara from California)
AJ, his electric bill must be sky high.
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
Judging by his house, he can afford it. :-)
Bruceide
I visited a fellow in FT. Worth who had converted a wet bar into a cool room for his orchids, grew wonderful masdevallia, etc., right in his living room.
marylois
Bruce - you must have visited Henry (Hank) Horton. Horton's is a first-class cool room all right.
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
In fact, you might be invited, if you can make the orchid show in November. Heh?
Fleur
Bruce, have you had any Australian growers ask to sell plants? Did I hear Masdevallias? now you are talking my language.
Bruceide
Fleur, I'm not aware of any Australian growers asking to sell our plants or asking us to sell theirs. We can't grow most masdevallias here, too warm, but I have seen a few that can survive here. Lois, I did, when I gave a presentation out there
.
I really need to get along also, It's late here in the east.
prankster d (Susan from the Northern edge of the Great Basin)
Bruce, hope to see you here again!
marylois
Thanks for coming by, Bruce!
Bruceide
Thanks for the warm welcome, will be back soon. Sparky-steve, come up Jog road and visit me at JEM orchids. Night all.

ellen
Anybody home at OrchidSafari?
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Hi Ellen, Carol here checking in.
Richard in West Palm Beach
Hi, Carol, Ellen -- I'm here, too. Carol, what did you think of the Dendrobium I brought Saturday? Steve has posted the first seven of the dens that have flowered at geocities: http://geocities.datacellar.net/RainForest/Vines/5955/Kd1.jpg
You can get all of them by changing the number before the .jpg from 1 through 8a. #5 is the nicest one so far
so I started you off with that one.
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Hi Richard, I thought it was great! How big can a dendrobium get? How many flowers do you expect it to have when it's full grown?
Richard in West Palm Beach
I expect they will have anywhere from 8-12 flowers on a stem. Each flower will have a 4"+ natural spread on the best of them.
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Those giant dens were great in person. I'll dream of two spikes of those on a plant!
Josh319 (The hosta, pond, and orchid guy!!)
What type is that den? It is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! Is it a nobile?
Richard in West Palm Beach
That's my cross of Den. King Dragon X Den Queen Dragon -- Now officially named King Dragon's Pride var. Ruby Prince, it's a Phalaenopsis type, but King Dragon is a mutation.
Josh319 (The hosta, pond, and orchid guy!!)
You don't happen to have any keikis, do you? I like #7, too.
Richard in West Palm Beach
They are just beginning to flower -- not big enough to keiki yet. However, I do have about 3,000 plants. I had the cross advertised in Orchids (AOS mag.) for last May or June. The best three are #5, #7 and #8 and #8a. These plants are flowering only 14 months out of flask!
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Richard, how many different crosses have you made?
Richard in West Palm Beach
I registered about a dozen crosses back in the 60's and 70's. Now I have a couple of dozen in flasks and as seedlings. This is the latest one to flower -- the others are at least a year or so away from flowering. Tomorrow I am planning to cross #5 with #7 and #8. THAT should result in some spectacular progeny!
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Have you always worked with Dendrobiums?
Richard in West Palm Beach
No, I started off with mule-ear Oncidiums and trying to get colors other than brown and yellow. Onc. Mary Saporita (Onc. stramineum X lanceanum) is spectacular -- I wish I could find some somewhere. But the best is Onc. Ruby Rains. (Onc. stramineum X Gene West [I think!])
Carol Holdren (Boca Raton, FL)
Thanks Richard, I wondered how you got to those beautiful Dendrobiums!
peterlin
Hi all
sparky-steve (from Boca Raton, Florida.)
There's the Phal man!!!!
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
I'm not sure you remember me, Peter, but once when you had Phal. gigantea seedlings, I bought one. Remember sending one to Macallister, Montana? *grins*
peterlin
But, of course, Aaron. Over the years, I also enjoy reading your humorous replies on the OLD...
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
What do you mean, humor? I'm drop-dead serious when I tell people that stuff. ;-)
peterlin
I just receive my plants from my NC shopping trip.. I'm going to have fun potting them up.. I got some phal Mok Chow Yew (gigantea x violacea)..these are huge plants.
bmtorchids (Barbara from California)
Peter, are the flowers huge too?
peterlin
Barbara - No...not really...but exotic due to gigantea and fragrant due to violacea.. everything were sent bare root so unfortunately I can't take any pictures to share...at least not until these bloom again in a few weeks.
marylois
Let's discuss ICS. I've been putting off going back til we know it's working well again...'web tag' ain't my cuppa tea. We first need to get all these new folks registred at ICS before we go over there. I'm really tied up til November 1st...think I'll start telling all to register this month, then post the ICS instructions to our HOW TO JOIN pages and we'll start going back over there for the second half in November - the 15th??? Another reason for delay is I've scheduled speakers and didn't want to get them mixed up on ICS...
peterlin
Well, I miss ICS..because somehow WBS works well ONLY with Netscape. I really don't like Netscape...IE from Microsoft is much better (GRIN).
marylois
How about telling folks to register at ICS in October and going over in November??? Remember, the conservation folks specifically asked for the early hour at WBS on their night. Sometimes a speaker prefers the earlier hour, and we must comply.
marilyninOttawa
I am using Netscape 4.0. How many of you are using Netscape?
sparky-steve (from Boca Raton, Florida.)
I have Netscape 4.03
marylois
I'm Netscape 3.x. Won't change til my ISP makes the next version available. They send out the one they are geared for.
AJHicks (Seedbank Dude, Socorro, NM)
Netscape here. Kicks butt.
gaillevy (Boca Raton, FL.)
I'm on Netscape 4.0, I think and haven't had many problems. Today they couldn't find any of the URLs I tried. I was trying to find electronic greeting cards. Couldn't access one site.
bmtorchids
Before I go, try out 100,000 free cool graphics
marilyninOttawa
Sounds like things are winding down for the night. I am looking forward to next week's session about reintroduction of orchids.
Evlyn
Night all.
marylois
Nite, Evie - me too!
See you fellas next Wed nite - I'm in Corpus Christi this coming Sat nite. Have a good one!
