GREENHOUSE TOURS

Northwest Louisiana

Even though we are 300 miles from the Gulf, the intervening swamps and waterways assure a high humidity area. Evaporative coolers are not too effective in these climes, but it's all we have (unless one wishes to air condition), and it does help. We're not going to grow any of the cool-growing species for very long, unless augmented by a "cool room".

What we do grow, is everything that will make it in our climate...and even have tried a few cool-to-intermediate species, passing them on to a grower with a cool room when it became obvious they weren't for us.

Temperatures range from 70-105F summers, 40-75F winters - with occasional peaks and drops in each instance. We're 200 miles due east of Dallas, and we share much of their weather, managing a few days of freezing weather - and snow or a sleet storm every couple years or so, making it necessary to have both a ventilated and heated greenhouse. Fortunately for us, most of the snow and ice that hits Dallas cuts north before reaching us.
