Maki is a ring-tailed lemur who was born 15 May, 1997 at the Indianapolis Zoo. He is in an off exhibit area with his parents, Fanny and Drac. He is part of the ring-tailed lemur Species Survival Plan (SSP). If interested in learning more information on the ring-tailed lemur please see the fact sheet. In the meantime, browse his "baby" pictures.
By two months of age he's starting to get very active. He's been practicing his climbing skills, although they're not very good yet. He's bouncing around a bit and that does make it hard to catch him alone on film. Still all eyes and ears.
At three months of age here's some pictures of him by himself. This doesn't mean he's getting slower, it just means that I've managed to catch him while he's catching his breath. He's now starting to eat solid foods, but he still supplements with meals from Fanny. Notice he's growing into those ears and eyes.
Well at four months of age he's almost completely independent. Fanny is in the process of weaning him and he is eating everything the adults are. He spends time coming up to us and is always wanting to know what we're up to. He's also discovered that we make good perches and it's often that you'll have a little lemur bouncing off some body part. Not bad now, but wait until he gets bigger. He's still playful though, as the picture of him in the box shows. He does like his toys.
