Shizuoka Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture decided to tackle with the conservation of Mt. Fuji in cooperative, under the basis of the strategy of cleaning Mt. Fuji and the statement suggested by both governors in TV in 1996 furthermore, of the Joint declaration of conserving Mt. Fuji. and the summit of Fujisan in 1997.
Both prefectures adopted the Mount Fuji Charter to inherit Mt. Fuji to future generation as the symbol of the proud mountain in Japan and show the first base of national green movement in 1998.
MOUNT FUJI CHARTERMount Fuji, with all its dignity and grandeur, has been admired by many since ancient times, and is regarded as the spiritual home of Japan.
As well as the diversity and richness if its natural environment, it also has considerable scientific significance, with its precious flora and fauna, in particular, its virgin forests.
Mount Fuji is indeed a blessing to us, with its magnificent landscape and abundance of subterranean water. These gifts of nature made the local region a very special one and have enabled the development of a distinctive and rich culture.
Excessive usage of these natural resources, however, and the various socio-economic activities carried out in the region, have had an adverse effect on Mount Fuji's natural environment. Should its environment be damaged further, it will be extremely difficult to restore.
In all areas, be it the environment, the landscape, history, culture, Mount Fuji reflects Japanese society today. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that Fuji's visitors exist in harmony with its environment.
We must make every effort to ensure the sustainability of Mount Fuji's environment, not just for ourselves, but also for future generations.
With this charter, we, and all those who love and respect Mount Fuji, vow to protect it, to treat it with appropriate care and to pass it on to future generations. It will remain one of Japan's greatest assets, a universally recognized symbol of our country of which we can all be proud.
The Governors of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures agree to the following aims to preserve the natural environment of Mount Fuji:
-To study, familiarize ourselves with, and respect the natural environment of Mount Fuji.
-To preserve the beauty of Mount Fuji and to develop its rich culture.
-To ease the burden under which Mount Fujifs natural environment is now placed, and to establish a balance whereby the environment and mankind can exist in harmony.
-To pursue activities on an individual basis with the aim of preserving the environment.
-To preserve Mount Fujifs environment, landscape, history and culture for future generations.
