Northern Prairie Skink (listed as vulnerable)
Skinks represent the largest family of lizards, but there are
only three species in Canada and only one in Manitoba - the
northern Prairie Skink. Total distribution area of the skink is
less than 100 km by 100 km. These reptiles grow up to 20 cm long
and have a bluntly tapered head, a cylindrical body and small legs.
The prairie skink lives in sandy soil, often under logs or rocks
and eats primarily insects. Like most skinks, the tail readily
breaks off if seized, then thrashes around to distract the predator
or human collector, while the rest of the skink makes its escape.
This species occurs in the north central U.S. with one isolated, or
disjunct, population in Manitoba. At one time the population may
have been continuous with the U.S. one, but a cool period may have
eliminated populations in less sandy areas where burrowing to avoid
winter cold was limited.
