The Watergirl is my niece. I was there to catch her as she slipped into the world, and i only just caught her, slippery are a fish she was. My own daughters were huddled in silent awe in the corner of my bedroom. I'd have given anything to see their faces as The Watergirl emerged, but i was a little preoccupied.
One of the memorable parts for me was of standing on one leg to hold a hot towel to my sisters cocix with my knee while using my hands to hold another hot towel to the base of her belly. The proved to be an excellent pain relief. The oil filled collumn heater she'd invested in, they're a good design for baby saftey, kept up with the four towel rotation. Eventually my niece slipped from her standing mother, the father supporting her, into my hands. I crouched and caught her just in time. This home birth was a success because we prepared well for it, we were committed to a good outcome, and we had the help of one of the most caring and supportive doctors you could ever hope to find. He left the hands on stuff to us and quietly, gently talked us through the birth. |
