The Whale's Head Shrine
During the latest renovations, a rectangular building, 4.5 meters by 9 meters was discovered while surveying the area between King Taksin's Shrine and the smaller of the two Chinese Residences. Documents have shown it to be the Whale's Head Shrine, a Chinese style, one story building similar to other Chinese shrines. The bones of a whale were kept inside the building.
The shrine collapsed on the day H.R.H. Crown Prince Kromma Phra Chakrapadibhongse died on April 11, 1902 and was never rebuilt. The bones of the whale were found in the basement of the King Taksin Shrine during the survey before renovation in 1940.
No clear evidence exists on the year the Shrine was built. When the Naval Academy moved in, the foundations were demolished, the area leveled and filled with earth brought in form other areas. Thus, very little evidence of the Shrine remained.
