Roses are sold according to grade, which is based on the quality of growth the plant had before being packaged. Grade #1 is the best and represents the top specimens of the type with two, three, or more heathy canes projecting from the bud union. Grade #1 1/2 has two or more thinner canes than grade #1. Grade #2 has only one or two canes. These standards were set back in 1923 and are revised periodically. No matter which grade you choose, the canes should not be shriveled, blackened, or show any other sign of damage. The bark should be green and the pith white or nearly white. If you purchase a grade #1 1/2 rosebush, you should pay less for this plant than you would for a grade #1.
