...you should know that the rocks that make up the "Rhinelander-Ladysmith Greenstone Belt" in Northeast Wisconsin are not like the relatively harmless ores once mined in Wisconsin. The ores they contain are sulfides.
So Why Worry About Sulfides?
These "Greenstone" rocks are ancient "sulfides," formed in the earliest days of our Earth, and now buried beneath hundreds of feet of fertile soil and lush forest. The minerals is these rocks, when exposed to air and water - for example, by mining - produce sulfuric acid (battery acid). Along with the zinc, copper, and other metals, the rock also contains lead, arsenic, selenium, chromium, and other elements hazardous to human and other life. Sulfide mines have polluted thousands of miles of rivers throughout the United States and many have become "Superfund" sites, costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year!
