Prairie Restoration
- Rolling Thunder Prairie consists of 83 acres of prairie land adjacent to The Nature Conservancy's Nachusa Grassland, a 1,000+ acre preserve.
The 83 acres are owned by Max and Sally Baumgardner. They have been restoring the prairie from farm land.
- Many other neighbors are also stewarding their lands to favor native Illinois species.
- Rolling Thunder Prairie has rare and endangered plants including:
Talinum rugospermum (fameflower), Cirsium hillei (Hill's thistle), Wulfenia bullii (kittentails -- new this
year!).
- Rolling Thunder Prairie boasts more Koeleria cristata (June grass) than any other section of Nachusa Grasslands.
- From Cactus to cattails in a 2-minute walk.
