Kind of nice to know a bird has received your surname, but it makes one curious as to who it was that named or discovered these magpies. Thank you for any information. Sharon Steere

Comments: Hello, I'm staying in Taiwan for a few years and am considering buying a bird. I'd like one that is native at least to this climate and happened upon your site. Very nice! It's difficult for a non-chinese speaker to find info an birds here... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for providing such wonderful pictures! I hope your summer trip to Mexico was wonderful!

Comments: Dope page. Lotsa great info. Though wish there were more info on insects. I was wondering if you know of any other insects that are indigenous to Taiwan besides beetles or butterflies. I know of cicadas, mosquitos and of couse huge ass flying cockroaches. What other insects are known from Taiwan? Also what kind of beetles are Taiwan known for? Well, if you could drop me a line with more info I'll be eternally grateful. 8)
thanks,
jen

Comments: Great site. I'll visit it many times to explore all you have to offer. When on a vacation, if you find yourself in Florida, go to Sanibel Island, just off coast of Ft. Myers (there is a $3 causeway), on FL's west coast. The Ding Darling Bird Sanctuary was named for a cartoonist/birder.... flocks of roseate spoonbills every twilight & lots of pilleated woodpeckers. Sanibel Is.has a turtle conservatory also & probably Asian turtles ?? are the large one that come to lay their eggs. Sanibel is best known for its conchology or shelling. Best island in world for sheer numbers of various varieties. Best shelling is in winter months after a good wind. Thanks again for your time & effort putting together a wonderful gift to all of us who share your love of nature.

Comments: Dear Wayne - Thanks for the letter and a very hearty congratualtons on getting in to Cornell. I really enjoyed looking at your homepage and am very impressed by all of your activities. Your drawings of birds are especially beautiful. It is great to see you doing so well. So, I presume that you will study ornithology or ecology at Cornell. Is this true? Are you excited to begin school? I am doing well. In the fall I began working towards a PhD at U.C. Berkeley in Rhetoric, which is basically Philosophy and Literary Theory. It is very interesting, but a lot of work. I've sort of left bird watching behind. I still very much enjoy doing it when I get the chance, but I find that I often simply go for a hike and do not bring my binoculars. I spend more time reading and studying foreign languages these days. Anyhow, life is well. Northern California is very beautiful and ecologically very diverse. I look forward to hearing more about what you are up to. Are you in touch with any one else from Andover? Have a good summer. Best, Mark

You remind me a lot of my younger days when I was active in collecting wildfowers in Australia, especially orchids, and then in college and grad school where i was most into insects, reptiles, and mammals, while actively birding at all times. I also ejoyed photography, though not nerarly to the extent that you do. I wish you the best at Cornell, a school I considered when selecting a grad school. I know you will enjoy your time there, though we will miss you interesting posts about tips to various areas in Taiwan. Sincerely, Tony Futcher

Comments: I signed your guestbook about two years ago, and a correction needs to be made. There's supposed to be a "just" after the "not." I suppose that changes the meaning of the sentence a little...but your interest in birds is truly infectious, Wayne, and I'm so pleased I went birding with you once, though I wasn't aware of half the things you noticed. The mountains seem to sharpen your senses somehow...you see and hear so much, and manage to recount everything with such accuracy in your trip reports. I've enjoyed reading them. I hope you get as much out of Cornell as you seem to have gotten out of Taiwan.

Comments: Hum...abundant information about birds and butterflies, and I'm especially impressed/thrilled by the nifty pix...I think there would be losa ppl wondering whether they're taken on this island, just like the first time I saw them. Ya know there're a lota ppl criticizing Taiwan as a shabby place, and always trying hard to struggle outa this place... I think the main problem is their attitude. They ne'er try to give some care to the land...just shutting their eyes and saying, "no I ain't see anything...." They set their home outside Taiwan, and making money of it, destroying...Well, I can't say much about this, cuz sometimes I just feel somewhat guilty that I'm no better than others. But I DO have know/some friends/strangers who truly deeply LUV this place, and INDEED, are doing something for it. She needs some more that kinda ppl. And thank ur generosity to lend me the pix for the symposium in Japan. I took the Formosa Blue Magpie one 4 bird (regional species), and some pix of common butterflies in Taiwan. They said I did a great job :) Thanx again... and about the bird sound...I know there's a resolution. That is if you do not compress them, then they can just go like what you said, click on and listen to it. But the size of the file would definitely be a problem, but tis up to ya loh. keep working!

Your section containing .wav files for bird songs piques my interest most of all. I'm always looking for vocalizations of new species that I have not encountered - especially the endemics of Taiwan.
