My parents, Carmon and Elizabeth, were Christians and attended church regularly. Dianne, my sister, and I were raise in the church. I began in the Cradle Roll Department at the First Baptist Church in Centerpoint, Alabama.
I had very good Sunday School teachers, but my Dad was also my teacher. He taught me how to live. He warned me of the trouble out there if I didn't live the "right" way. There was the Boys Industrial School if I got in trouble in "the world". Dad also told me of the trouble I would get into if I didn't ask Jesus Christ to come live in my heart. One thing stuck with me for sure, just because Dad was a Christian didn't mean that I was a Christian.
During Vacation Bible School, the pastor talked with the older boys and girls about being saved. He told us what God wants for us, the Plan of Salvation. At the end of his talk, I asked Jesus to come into my heart.
I was changed. I accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I began living my life for Him. So, at 9 years old, I got the desire of my heart. I became a Christian too.
Since I was now a Christian, I wanted to do something special for the Lord. I searched for things to do for Him. At a young age, I discovered He had given me a love for music.
I was willing to sing for the Lord, but there were problems. First, I was very bashful. In fact, I was so bashful that, when I was in a pool and girls got in, I got out! So, to be able to sing for Him in public, was going to be a tremendous feat!!
Secondly, eventhough I had a love for music and a desire to sing for The Lord, I had to develop a singing voice. I would pray to Him to give me a voice that people would want to hear. When I was 16, my prayers were answered.
I entered a talent contest at the high school I attended. I signed up to sing although I had only one voice lesson. After my performance, people were amazed at how well I had done. I knew the reason I had done so well. Voice lessons had nothing to do with it. I knew it was the Lord!!
Then The Lord worked again in my life. He was showing me my future vocation. Eventhough I was studing music at Alabama College at Montevallo, I was employed at different churches in their Music Ministry. The churches I served at were: Trinity Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama- at the age of 19; Boyles Baptist Church in Tarrant City, Alabama; and Beachwood Baptist Church in Inglenook, Alabama.
Then The Lord had me to specialize in church music. I pursued this area at Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Florida. While attending BBI, I was employed at: Calvary Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama; and First Baptist Church in Lynn Haven, Florida.
After that, The Lord led me to transferred to Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. Here I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree with a Major in Applied Voice and Minor in Church Music. While attending Mississippi College, I served at First Baptist Church in Taylorsville, Mississippi.
After graduating, I attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I was working on a Master's Degree. But, it seemed The Lord had other plans for me. The Lord led me into Music Evangelism. I traveled to various churches in the Southeast, Canada, and South America. I recorded two albums and met many fine Christian people. I pray my music touched the hearts of the people that heard me sing. During this time, I also attended Samford University.
I went back into Music Ministry at The First Baptist Church of Sulligent, Alabama; and then at Calvary Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama. (I met my present wife, Debra, in Gadsden when she was "just a kid".) But, I married Peggy Woods Godfrey, the mother of my children. Peggy had Angie and Blake from a previous marriage to Ken Godfrey.
I moved back to Birmingham and served at Eastmont Baptist. Then, after a couple of years, we moved to Pell City, Alabama and served at Mount Pisgah. We remained there four years and moved to Elmore, Alabama and served at Mount Hebron West Baptist. While at Mount Hebron West, I got another Bachelor's degree, this time in Education.
I moved back to Pell City, Alabama and taught for Talladega City Public School System then for Shelby County School System. I taught at Vincent Elementary/Vincent High School and was Minister of Music at The First Baptist Church at Vincent, Alabama for 14 years.
I have served a total of 39 years in Music Ministry and I am presently at Faith Baptist Church in Cartersville, Georgia. Here, with The Lord's help, I'm trying to teach reading music and singing parts to the choir in order to glorify The Lord.
1. You need to be saved. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
2. You cannot save yourself. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to he mercy he saved us." Titus 3:5
3. Jesus has provided for your salvation. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
4. You must accept Jesus for salvation. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." Acts 16:31
5. Now is the time to accept Jesus as your Savior. "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." II Corinthians 6:2.
If you will receive Christ as your Savior, simply pray this prayer from your heart:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do now ask you to forgive me of my sins and come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
