The War Between the States, as its more rightly called because there is nothing civil about war. But, it holds a dear part in our heritage for it was truly brother against brother besides state against state.
I am a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and still researching more lines that reportedly fought for the Confederacy. During my research, I have discovered there may be a line that fought for the Union from North Alabama.
William Alfred Phillips, WA Phillips as he liked to be called, fought for the Confederacy from Hart County, Georgia where he lived. Later he moved to and is buried in Marshall County, Alabama with other members of his family.
My uncle, Glenn Chappell, went to WA's grave and told me that it has been decorated. I am also applying for the Real Great Great Grandaughters Chapter of UDC on WA Phillips.
I'll tell more of his military background upon discovery. But now, I want to tell you of more of my relatives in The War Between the States.
William Butler Durham fought for the Confederacy in South Carolina. I discovered this upon receiving a copy of the Historical Genealogy of the Smith-Durham Families from my Uncle Glenn.
William Butler Durham was the only son of Cleveland and Rebecca Durham. His father, Cleveland Durham, had several brothers and sisters, but no further information is available.
William was married to Serena Elvira McAdams and her parents were Thomas McAdams and Margaret Martin. Their graves are in Abberville, S. C.
William was born September 11, 1839 and Serena was born February 27, 1840. He died March 4, 1909 and she died June 15, 1916. Both grave locations are in Blooming Grove Cemetery, Walker County, Alabama. William served in the Civil War and was in Company C, 4th South Carolina Infantry of the Confederate States of America.
I am searching for but have not discovered military information on Robert Clark Chappell. I believe he fought for the Confederacy. He had slaves and there were children born before and after the War Between the States, but not during. He is buried in Henry County, Georgia. Any information you can contribute would be appreciated.
William C. Holcomb reportedly fought for the Union from North Alabama. My distant cousin, Kenny Scislaw from Guntersville, Alabama, has told me that it is a family tradition that he fought for the Union. Articles in the paper have been written about the trials and hardship of war on his wife, Sally Lane, and their children. Any information would be appreciated.
