NIAGARA

(for Kris St. Louis)

Upon a chill November day

You were there, and I,

Together where the waters fall

To be endlessly away and gone,

Always,

Ever,

Endlessly away

How bright those moments seemed to shine

'Til caught within cascades of time,

Shining brightly, all too briefly,

Each escaped me,

Then was gone

Yet in my heart of hearts I know

Though endlessly the waters flow,

Though moments pass, and then are gone,

Love's brightness ever lingers on,

Love never fades away

And so, though shadows seem to close

Sometimes, upon what we most love,

I know a time will someday come

When together, we will look upon

All shadows fleeing,

Endlessly away

(Nothing forgotten, Kris...)

 Postscript

Niagara was written in December 1998. I'd visited Kris in Ontario the first week of November, and during that all-too-brief interval she and her friend Annie had taken me to see the falls for the first time.  (photograph Our day there was a gift. It was filled with perfect, timeless moments, that continue to shine in my memory. The poem, I wrote and sent to Kris as a thank you.

Kris St. Louis passed away from this world on May 9, 1999, after a long illness. She left behind for her many friends countless happy memories, her wonderful music, and her love.
