.....Ecology/Environment/Conservation: This site describes the most comprehensive and useful sites related to Ecological and Conservation topics, issues and organizations, with emphasis on those with the best Links-pages. It also has a section where you can tell other people about your favorite Ecological or Conservation-related sites.
Ecology on the Web:
A Guide to on-line Resources
.....Welcome to my humble eco-site. It isn't an all-embracing collection of hundreds of the-links-and-nothing-but-the-links, but rather a "Links-to-Links" page, which gives descriptions of the best Ecologically-related sites which contain plenty of links or eco-site search features, both General and Marine. Together, these sites contain links to nearly any Ecological or conservation-related site you'd ever want to see! I've added a few notes about each, describing their best or most unique features.
....You, the gentle browser, are invited to share your favorite conservation or ecological websites with us, so we can post them in the "other links of interest" section, for all to see! ("E"-us!)
....Finally, for the nautical types, there is also a small-but-growing collection of arcticles (and links to great arcticle-sites, where people with lots more time than me are constantly adding interesting goodies!) about current "Hot Topics" in Marine Conservation, with a good few links embedded within the individual arcticles. If you come across such links, or any "current interest" arcticles, PLEASE feel free to forward them (Contact Us): they will be posted and indexed. Meanwhile,
Get interested, Get Informed, Get INVOLVED!!
NOTE: If you find any Dead Links, we would be grateful if you reported them!!

Yours,

First, some Educational-Resource sites:
.....................*Environmental Education Network: Splendid resource for Educators at all levels, from grade one to graduate-level university!! Links and information galore, and it is easy to use. Even has a section helping you find a job in the evironmental field. HIGHLY recommended!! (back)
NOTE: The following three pages are all on the excellent site of the "Committee for the National Institute for the Environment", which is a very active Enviro-enducational organization.
.....................*On-line Environmenatlly-related Libraries: At the bottom of this page is an incredible search engine which allows you to search for "online libraries" of information, books and documents about everything from Whale-watching to forestry, Demography to Agriculture -comprehensive!!
.....................*On-line Environmentally-Related Journals: Links to 300 of them!
.....................*State of the Environment Reports: Links to reports on the state of the Environment in countries and regions around the world: an very comprehensive compilation!!
.....................*UNESCO International Directory on Environmental Education Institutions: While not yet properly-speaking a "links - page", this site is so comprehensive (to 1995, with a Year 2000 edition promised soon!) that it would be a crime to leave it out. Organized by country-within-region, it uses a very liberal definition of "Institution", so that there are Hundreds of listings for some countries such as the USA: an excellent resource!!
.....................*Virtual Library:(home page) (Biodiversity and Ecology section): This is a totally wonderful resource for a huge range of topics, each one being maintained by dedicated volunteers. The Biodiversity and Ecology portion is easy to use, and quite well organized. It is particularly good for sites related to Endangered Species.
.....................*About.com/Miningco Environmental site:.An Excellent Environmental links-direcory - extremely well maintained and conveniently arranged by category. Also has environmental news reports with embedded links, and a great "related links" feature, so you can pursue a story further. Other interesting things on the site include an "environmental clip art" repository, with environmental-related graphics and backgrounds for you own sites! a
.....................*Action-Oriented Site!!: Help officials make the proper decisions! (described below, since it is not a links-site - i just wanted to draw your attention to a site where you can get involved right away!):
.....................*BUBL-Link Internet Library: A quite splendid British resource, funded by Higher Education Councils in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which gives one many selected links to "Selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas" . Each link is very well annotated: a definite Plus!!! The Life Sciences Page has many Environmental categories in it. Highly Recommended!!
.....................*EE-Link Environmental-organization directory:.(USA only)::The GAIN Directories of Environmental Organizations consist of over 13,000 records of environmental organizations throughout the continental US and Hawaii: an excellent resource!
.....................*Earth-Dream Eco-Page: This is a "people-centered" approach to ecological issues, and contains a delightful range of sites you just won't find in the directories below - Human Rights, Animal Rights, Vegetarian, and urban-ecology topics are featured. Bird-watchers and other Avain folks will also find their list of Bird-related links very useful!
.....................*Econet: This is an INDESPENSABLE resource for anyone seeking to make living conditions better for all the planet's inhabitants - inclucing our own species! Operated by the Institute for Global Communications - an excellent full-service ISP, the site supports Econet, Peacenet, Womensnet, labornet, and Conflictnet, and the Econet portion seems to be the place where all them intersect - at any given time, it may feature stories on steelhead trout and the timber industry, an essay on what pacifists could do to help end the war in Kosovo, and arcticles about biotechnology and "terminator" seed production. Each "net" also features an Alert page, which advises one regarding issues needing immediate action on the part of concerned citizens (like most of these pages, USA- centered, but the rest of the world will catch up sooner or later!!)
.....................*Ecology WWW Page: A great page maintained by the Botany Net, with a very large selection of Ecological and related sites, in alphabetical order. Mirror site: (in case the Canadian one is down!)
.....................*Envirolink Network: A vast site, with hundreds of links to search (requires patience, but the selections are varied and interesting!) and a variety of services- of excellent value for anyone involved in conservation work or issues.
.....................*Environmental Education Network: Excellent! Described Above. Included here, because it also has many general-interest features.
.....................*Environmental Justice Resources on the Internet: Covers all aspects of environmental justice- quite an interesting site. Includes a section on "brownfields" - the restoration of contaminated lands (and who pays for it!)
.....................*Environmental News Network (ENN): An excellent site for those who wish to "keep up with the issues" currently breaking in relation to Ecological matters, all over the planet.æ A certain amount is available for free, with the splendid feature of including "related sites and arcticles" for some of the arcticles.æ However, the best part is a DAILY collection of environmental stories, in the form of a subscriber newsletter, which has about 15 lenghthy arcticles per day, including a good "daily feature".æ Highly recommended, and well worth the small expenditure!!
.....................*Environmental Organization Web Directory: A truly splendid site!! Rather weak on the marine side (so far- i have pointed this out to them!!), but for land-oriented organizations, this is THE place to go to. If they do not list the site you are looking for, they will even look it up for you!!! A really easy site to use: well-planned, well laid-out. Highly recommended.
.....................*The Gadfly: Environmental ethics and policies - a good place to find links to sites and pages dealing with these issues. See "Other links of Interest", below, for a better description of this unique site.
.....................*Global Climate Change Master Directory: Links to Internet Resources with Global Climate Change, Earth Science and Environmental Data and Information. Excellent!
.....................*The Green Lane Home Page: HAD to include this, because it is CANADIAN! For a government site, remarkably unbiased, with an excellent range of features and a good links section, which is both Candian and worldwide as well. A Splendid environmental resource - for CANADIANS especially!!
.....................*Greenlink : Another huge, feature and service-packed site, splendidly useful to anyone interested and/or involved in environmental issues of all kinds (not just marine- actually, the marine componant is a bit weak, but all sites cannot be all things to all people!!). Strong Educational Componant, with chat and BB componants. Check out the "Links 2 Links" page, for a great selection of environmental links pages!!
.....................*Greenpeace: Although the site has no links-page, it contains a VAST repository of reports, arcticles, stories, and other documents (going back several years!) which can be searched easily, via the site-only search engine. As a scientist, I particularly like their practice of giving Primary Sources - something seldom seen in the popular media!!
.....................*KZPG Overpopulation News Network: Overpopulation is an important componant of the problem, to be sure (overconsumption, greed, ignorance and an immense indifference stemming from self-centeredness being some of the others!!). While this site has a certain right-wing "edge" to it which may make some people uncomfortable, it does have many excellent links to the sites of organizations, study centers, newletters, newsgroups and individuals involved in issues related to overpopulation.
.....................*Mass Extinction Links: A relatively small collection of links dealing with the most pressing and possibly least understood ecological issue of our era: The ever-increasing (but still not irreversible!) loss of biodiversity which appears to be leading up to the the extinction of perhaps 30 - 40% of all the species on the planet by the middle of next century (less than 2/3 of a human lifespan!!!), and a vast diminution of the rich tapestry of life we currently enjoy on the only planet we have.
.....................*The Need to Know Library: An interesting page, which has good links to national park and wilderness areas, and is a good resource for teachers.
.....................*Toll-Free Environmental Directory: While not free itself (costs $18), it lists over 7000 toll-free numbers to non-profit organizations, environmentally-centered companies, U.S. government agencies involved in environmental work, etc. intended "primarily for people who want to work in the environmental field and solve environmental problems.", but with that many contacts, must have some relevance to more than this specific group!
.....................*Virtual Library of Ecology and Biodiversity: An excellent site, well-organized by category, with a great many links. Has a Search Page, and the associated Home Page is quite interesting as well. Good educational resource.
.....................*World Resources Institute Links section: A very Well-organized environmentally-related resource directory, with including sections on Business and the Environment, Information resources, internatioal policy, United Nations organizations...... For a description of this fascinating and vast site, see "Other links of Interest", below.
.....................*YAHOO!'s "Environment and Nature" section is a wide-ranging, well-maintained, frequently-updated, and user-friendly corner of the web which has quite a bit to recommend it, all-around. Good organization, so you can quickly find what you are looking for!

Other Eco-Links of interest suggested by our readers:
.....................*Beczak Center Home Page: An interesting site by a foundation which is working to clean up the Hudson River, in New York (this is the one which caught fire in the 1970s!!). Good example of Community Participation in environmental reconstrution!! (as in "Think globally, Act locally"!)
.....................*Environmental Defence Fund: The Environmental Defense Fund is a not-for-profit environmental advocacy group with four main goals: (1) Stabilizing the Earth's climate, (2) Safeguarding the world's oceans, (3) Protecting human health, and (4) Defending and restoring biodiversity. This site has a splendid Activist page, where people get "action alerts" to help them have a positive influence upon decisions in the political and corporate arenas

and in progress), news and notes, bibliographies and other research tools, and much

web sites, publications, organizations and educational institutions devoted to the
study of environmental ethics and policy.>

.....................*The Nature Net Forums: A great "entry level site" for people interested in nature, but not in a technical or scientific sense - great for young folks, or folks young at heart! Not really eco-centered, but it could raise interest levels, get people out into the natural world, and lead to better awareness!
.....................*Population Study of a Canadian Province: A look at the effects of (human) population levels upon the smallest, most densly-populated province (an island) of Canada, from a "Deep Ecology" perspective: an extremely insightful (even if a bit wordy!), thought-provoking essay - a GREAT read!
.....................*World Resources Institute Links section: The following is taken from their site. It is a Wonderful resource for Researchers!! < World Resources Institute believes a healthy environment and healthy economy can coexist. Since 1982, we have used information and knowledge as tools to move human society to live in ways that protect Earth's environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations. They lead with ideas and persuade with practical solutions. To further our mission, we conduct policy research, publicize policy options, encourage adoption of innovative approaches and provide strong technical support to governments, corporations, international institutions, and environmental NGOs.>
