Legend of the Dream Catcher

The Old Ones tell that dreams

hold great power

and drift about at night

before coming to the sleeping ones

To keep the dreamer safe

the Old Ones created a special web

the Dream Catcher

to hang above their sleeping places

When dreams travelled the web paths

the bad dreams lost their way

and were entangled

disappearing with the first rays of daybreak

The good dreams, knowing the way

passed through the center

and were guided gently

to the sleeping ones......

Wolf pack

From the Alpha to the Omega, Each has their place in the pack

The Alpha: Big, Strong, Commanding, respected by the pack

A true symbol of leadership.

The Omega: quiet, submissive, the lowest ranking member of the pack

Yet, valued highly by the pack as the instigator of play and fun.

The pack eats, sleeps, plays and hunts as one...

each member to the pack quickly learn their place and join the pack

helping to maintain a close knit family.

The wolf is a true victim of man's insecurity,

Haunted by evil legends, tales and fables,

Hunted to the brink of their very extinction.

But the Spirit of the Wolf cannot be broken,

they have survived man's attempts to destroy them.

Now they struggle to maintain their rightful place in the wilderness.

Maybe if man learns to understand the values of the pack--

Like the lone wolf that cannot survive without the pack

man cannot survive alone without his fellow kind.

Continue to fight for your survival, Wolf pack:

Raise your young,

bring them up in your footsteps

Run Free-----Run Wild,

Maybe someday your Howl to unite the pack will be heard Everywhere

MORNING STAR

According to a Pawnee legend,

there was a war between the Morning Star (Mars) and the Evening Star (Venus).

The victor, Morning Star, and Evening Star then united,

and from their union the first human, a girl, was born.

In return for putting the girl on Earth, Morning Star demanded the sacrifice of a maiden,

so Pawnee warriors would capture a young woman from an enemy camp.

The ceremony focused on death and rebirth

and since the wolf was first to experience death, his symbolic presence was essential.

The captive maiden was well cared for by the Pawnee Wolf Man,

keeper of a sacred wolf bundle,

that her message to the heavens would bring the Pawnee favor.

She would be painted half red and half black as the Morning and Evening Star

to be sacrificed upon the rising of the Morning Star.

In the early 1800s, a young warrior daringly saved the girl

and returned her to her own.

Not knowing what fate awaited him, he returned to the Pawnee,

only to be treated as a hero by a people who were glad to see the custom come to an end

Wolf Star

When the time had come to create the earth,

Pawnee legend tells us a great council was held

and all the animals were invited except Wolf Star.

He resented this treatment

and looked for ways to express his anger.

He began to watch the Storm That Comes Out of the West,

who was responsible for traveling the world

and seeing that all went well.

in his travels, the Storm That Comes Out of the West carried a whirlwind bag

in which he kept the first people.

Every evening, he would stop and release people

and they would camp and hunt.

Seeing an opportunity, Wolf Star sent a gray wolf from the sky to steal the whirlwind bag.

While Storm was asleep, the wolf took the bag and ran away.

He finally opened it, thinking he might find something to eat,

and the first people came out and set up camp.

But they quickly realized there was no buffalo to hunt.

And the discovered that wolf had let them out instead of Storm,

they became angry and killed the wolf.

The Storm that Comes Out of the West came upon the first people

and the wolf they had killed.

He told them to skin the wolf and make a sacred bundle with it,

wrapping it in everything that would bring back the memory of what had happened.

Then he named the first people Skidi Pawnee, the wolf people,

and told them that by killing the wolf

they had brought death into the world.

Wolf Star continues to rise just before dawn,

reminding the people of this time and accompanied by a chorus of earth wolves

as they howl skyward before the first light of day.
