TRADE UNIONIST APPEAL

FOR A DEMONSTRATION ON 29 MAY 1999 IN COLOGNE

20 million unemployed and 60 million poor, precarisation of labour, ever increasing inequalities, social, fiscal and salary dumping, questioning of women's right to work, regression in social protection systems, expulsion of immigrants, this is the outcome of two decades of neo-liberal policy in Europe. The refusal of this situation has played a role in changing the political majority of most European countries - the latest being Germany.

Nevertheless, we know that without social mobilisation nothing will really change. It is therefore urgent for the trade union movement to take up its stand again and to mobilise throughout Europe :

. For jobs, for a different sharing of richnesses and incomes that will
bring an end to misery, precarity and inequalities.

· To stop job losses, delocalisations, closures, privatisations and the
dismantlement of public services.

· For a radical reduction in working time throughout Europe, without loss of
wages, without flexibility or overtime and with corresponding hiring.

· For the strengthening of social protection for all (health care,
unemployment benefits, pensions).

· To push through other policies that will put an end to neo-liberal
attacks, meet social needs and guarantee labour rights and trade union liberty.

· For equal access to rights for everybody and for the suppression of all
forms of discrimination against women, young people and immigrants

In order to satisfy these demands,we call upon the whole trade union movement to mobilise for the European Union Summit which will end the German presidency period.

We therefore call for a massive demonstration in Cologne, on 29 May 1999, with the associations fighting against unemployment and social exclusion. Cologne, 24 January 1999
