Notes for CHRISTIAN NEISWANDER:

Three very young brothers, Christian, Hans (John) and Issac came to America from Switzerland with their widowed mother Katharine (Baumgartner) Neuenschwander who spoke German. They arrived September 30, 1754, at Philadelphia on the ship Phoenix, and landed the following day. Issac and Christian Neuenschwander, two unmarried uncles of the young immigrants, were on the same voyage.

"Chrisly" married Ann Tschantz and to them seven children were born. Ann was born in 1743. She was the daughter of Hans Tschantz. Ann died in 1815. Ann’s father was a Mennonite bishop and the Mennonite Historical Society of Lancaster has his book of sermons and ledgers. Christian moved from Pennsylvania to Rockingham Co. Virginia in 1786.

Christian and Ann both died in 1815.

Seeking information concerning Mariah (Mary?) Neiswander of probably Rockingham Co. VA, mar. to John W. Good. He was b. 1780 also probably Rockingham Co.VA. The couple moved to Fairfield Co., OH about 1816. One of their children, Abraham N. Good was b. 1815 in VA. He married Rebecca Black 1849 in Fairfield Co., OH and the couple moved to Norwalk, Warren Co., IA, and were among the town's earliest settlers. Would love to know more about my Neiswander ancestry. I believe it possible that Barbara Neiswander, who married John W. Good's brother, David, could have been a sister to Mariah. <jandjsmith@webzone.net>

Posted by: Dick Hulan (ID *****1797) Date: June 05, 2002 at 07:58:20

Mrs. Rena Niswander. Dear Niece.

I have in my possession a letter written

by you, which Pearl requested me to answer.

In the first place will tell you that my Grandfather

Christian Niswander was born in Switzerland

in about the year 1734. Came with his widowed

mother, and two brothers toi America in the year

1738, he being four years old. One little brother

died on the Ship, and was burried in the Ocean.

Great-Grandmother with her three boys made their home

in Lancaster Co. Pensylvania. After Grandfather

grew up to manhood, he married a Miss Johns.

and moved to Rockingham Co. Va. Bought a fine farm

near Dayton, Va. on which he lived and died.

Grandfather Niswander had seven children, two boys,

and five girls. which I will name, Abraham, (who

was a menonite preacher.)

2

Christian, (who was my father)

Maria N. Hockman. who lived, & died, in West Virginia.

Barbara N. Good. Magdalena N. Good. and Susan N. Graham.

those three, last named lived & died in Fairfield Co.

Ohio. [Note attached with a straight pin to top of this page:]

As I looked over my letter, I found I missed

one name of my father's Sisters. will give it here.

viz Elizbeth N. Simmers. who lived & died near

Dayton Va.

[continuing 5th line of p. 2:]

My father Christian Niswander was married

to Susanna Showalter, daughter of Christian

Showalter. to them were born fourteen children.

which I shall name in order as they were born.

Joseph N.... Lydia N. Roller. Christian N.. (Jake's father).

Margaret N.. Wine. Susanna N.. died aged 17 years.

Elizabeth N. Garber Miller. Abraham N.. died aged 14

Isaac N.. Mary N. died aged 9 years. Delila N.. Beery.

Jacob N... Kate N.. Gochenour. Samuel N.. the

last three named are still living. One infant

was dead born. This is about as near correct as

I am able to give it. and I can't see why our

side of the family Should not have a prominent

3

place in that manuscript.

Mr. Nelson the man whome you refered to, was at my

house, looking up the family Reccord, and I, with

the family Bible in hand, gave him all the

particulars down to the fourth, & fifth, generations.

and he was taking notes of the same.

I think our side of the Niswanders should be first,

and foremost, for the simple fact, that my Great-

Grandmother was the first Niswander that ever

put feet on American Soil.

Hoping this will at least give you some information

in regard to our ancestors.

Yours Respectfully,

Kate A. Gochenour

Will write a few lines on the

oposite Side, to my Nephue J. Niswander.

Notes for JOHN GRAHAM:

John Graham was born in the year 1785 at Rockingham County, Virginia and migrated from there to Fairfield County, Ohio about the year 1820.

For several centuries nearly all the Grahams lived in Scotland, and it was from there that John Graham's father emigrated, coming from Kilwinning, Scotland about 1750.

The Grahams were practically all the Presbyterian faith. There were a few Catholics, but it is estimated that these numbers did not exceed two percent of that faith.

The name "Graham" was originally "Graeme". The meaning given for the name is: fierce; stern; courageous.

The Graham family is among the best families. It is very ancient, and its members have distinguished themselves in the affairs of the various countries in which they have lived.

Children of SUSANNAH NEISWANDER and JOHN GRAHAM are:

5. i. FANNIE4 GRAHAM, b. October 19, 1813; d. March 25, 1871.

6. ii. ANNA GRAHAM, b. October 19, 1814; d. April 03, 1888.

7. iii. JOSEPH RUBE GRAHAM, b. December 23, 1815; d. August 05, 1889.

8. iv. LYDIA GRAHAM, b. April 04, 1817; d. Unknown.

v. BENJAMIN R GRAHAM, b. August 14, 1819; d. Unknown.

Generation No. 3

4. FANNY4 GOOD (BARBARA3 NEISWANDER, CHRISTIAN2, ABRAHAM1 NEUENSCHWANDER) was born December 21, 1816 in Fairfield Co. Ohio, and died January 28, 1892 in Fairfield Co. Ohio. She married DANIEL BEERY September 14, 1837, son of ABRAHAM BEERY and SUSAN BEERY.

Notes for FANNY GOOD:

Fanny2 Good (Barbara' Neuenschwander) was born in Fairfield Co. Ohio Dec. 21, 1816. Fanny died Jan. 28, 1892 in Fairfield Co. Ohio, at 75 years of age.

She married Daniel Beery Sept. 14, 1837. Daniel was born in Fairfield Co. Ohio Jan. 29, 1812. He was the son of Abraham Beery and Susan Beery. Daniel died Nov. 7. 1891 in Marion Twp. Hocking Co. Ohio, at 79 years of age. He died on the farm where he was born. Abraham Berry was the son of Jacob Beery and Susan was the daughter of Nicholas Beery 11 and Ma Keller. Fanny learned to read both English and German, but never learned to write. She was said to be good at "figuring". Fanny made and sold butter that was cooled by a constant stream of cold spring water. Bread and pies were baked in an outdoor oven made of mortar with a brick floor on which a hot fire was built and then raked out. She and her daughters made most of the family clothes from cloth of homegrown flax and wool woven after spinning and coloring of the thread. Daniel had limited knowledge of reading, writing and "figuring". What he was able to obtain was probably received through teachers employed by farmers to go from home to home, giving as much time to teach the children as the parents could afford.

Fanny and Daniel Beery had 17 children in 20 years, from 1838 to 1858. Three

died in childhood, one was an old maid, but the remaining 13 got married and

Joseph Wenger's history documents all of them. Lots of cousins for us to

think about!

Cause of Death: Heart failure. Age 72

Notes for ANGELIA POLING:

Anbelia Poling was born in Perry County, Ohio, Feb. 26, 1826, died at her home in Pleasant township, Jan. 1, 1917, age ninety years, ten months and twenty-three days.

She was left an orphan at the age of three years, and was the last of a family of ten children to pass to her reward. She was joined in matrimony with Abraham Graham on Oct. 19, 1847, Rev. Philip Swartz officiating. To this union were born seven children, five sons and two daughters, three sons having preceded her to the spirit world. She leaves two sons, H. V. and John W. Graham and two daughters, Mrs G. W. Sites, of Pleasant township, and Mrs M. A. Ewing of Gailiton, Tennesee, seven grandchildren and husband preceded her to the spirit world in 1893. She was converted and baptized and joined the church of the United Brethren at Pleasant Hill, about sixty-five years ago. For eighty-five years she lived in the community in which she died. Grandma Graham, as she was affectionately called by all who knew her was an optimistic Christian, whose mind was free from gloomy presentiments. In her youth she graspet the great truth, that God is love, and because of that love she felt the approval of her unbounded cheerfulness. The young and old in the community will miss this good woman's counsels and endearing words. For almost five years she lingered on a bed of suffering, but two days before she died God merelfully benumbed her pain and her suffering was ended.

Much indeed, may be said of this good and gentle woman, her many charties and qualities of heart were known to all who were so fortunate as to come within the range of her acquaintance; but any sketch of her life would be manifestly incomplete if no mention were made of her intellectual attributes and acquirements. Endowed with a mind both receptive and tententive, and possessed of studious temperments she readily acquired a familiarity with history and literature, which showed that she had drunk deep of the springs of knowledge. Without exageration it may be truthfully asid that consultation with her upon the subjects in general was line turning the pages of the encyclopedia so vast and varied was her learning.

It must not because of her great years be inferred that questions of the day were not of interest to her conversant with the records and .........

Shirley:

Your Lodowick/Ludwig/Lewis Sits/Sitz intrigues me because Washington County, Md., is on the likely migration route for my Lewis Seitz Sr. from York County, Penn., to Rockingham County, Va. However, I have no information to indicate my Lewis ever lived in Washington County, Md. Furthermore, the names of the wife and two daughters of your Lodowick/Ludwig/Lewis do not match my Lewis.

Lewis Seitz was born as Ludwig Welck Jan 5, 1763, at Dammhof near Adelshofen, Baden, Germany. He came to Pennsylvania with his adoptive parents, Johannes Seitz and Catherine Rueb/Ripp, arriving on the Richmond in October 1764.

Lewis probably married Anna Beery in York County, Penn., before moving to Rockingham County, Va., in 1788 or '89. He and family moved to Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1801 or 1802. This move was done with the congregation of the White House Church due to their opposition to slavery. He became a prominent Baptist preacher in Ohio, being the first preacher for the Pleasant Run Baptist Church, which was formed by that congregation.

Lewis and Anna had 14 or 15 children, but none named Magdalena or Ester.

Lewis died May 13, 1823, in Washington County, Penn., while returning to his Fairfield County, Ohio, home from Pennsylvania and/or Virginia.

My ggg-grandfather, Lewis Seitz Sr., (1763-c1822) was a Primitive Baptist pastor. He moved from Pennsylvania to Rockingham (possibily present-day Page) County, Va. in the late 1780s and then to Fairfield County, Ohio in the early 1800s. The latter move was with what became the congregation of the Pleasant Run Baptist Church of which he was the first pastor. He did not marry a Spitler. Nor did he come from Mennonite stock. His wife was Anna Beery (the granddaughter of a Mennonite immigrant). However, four of his children married Spitlers. John m. Magdelena Spitler; Catherine m. Jacob Spitler; Mary m. Henry Spitler and Peter m. Rebecca Spitler. These marriages all took place in Ohio.

Robert C. Graham's memorial plaque was dedicated Thursday afternoon on a loarg stone placed in front of the Owosso-Corunna Area Chamber of Commerce building, 215 N. Water.

Graham, who had been chamber executive director of the chamber, died early Sept. 3 of complications from multiple bee stings, sustained when he had been working in his home's garden south of Owosso the evening before.

Chamber board member Don Horton who headed the drive for the memorial stone, and Chamber President Linn Back spoke briefly.

"We really progressed under his leadership, from the roof to the furnishings to the carpeting", said Back.

Horton was on the Search Committee when Graham was hired in 1991. Bob said he would like to see a stone in the chamber's landscaping. A couple of times he asked me about going out to find one. Now we have Bob's stone," Horton said.

The slogan on the memorial's plaque came from a brass bookmark Graham had given to Owosso Kiwanis members when he completed his presidency in 1989; " Pride In Our Past and Present; Promise For Our Future."

It was found earlier this fall by Horton's wife. Sandy, when she was going through some drawers, Horton said.

Chamber board members contributions paid for the plaque. The rock and its installation were donated by Fuoss Gravel Co. of Owosso Township.

My parents were Edgar BURRES Eliker and Edna Mabel Folkerth who

married September 18, 1912. I was the 4th and last child. As my maternal

grandmother was a Hershey, I also have a couple of pieces of information on

that line, also. I realize this is not direct GRAHAM information, it would

perhaps make a difference to someone looking at John's descendants.

I have to ask about your sources for all of the website information. Did

you get it from census, state, county, etc.? From FTM websites of other

relatives? I am in awe of all of the bits and pieces. You do marvelous

work!! It is a beautiful website and I am really happy to have been able to

get through to it this morning. Thanks so much!!
