ANIMALS AND INSECTS OF GOR

ANIMALS

Armored gatch:
A marsupial living in the
Schendi rainforests.

Black Squirrels:
Inhabitant of the rainforest.

Bosk:
cross between the Yak and Buffalo,
meat can be roasted, dried, stewed,
broiled, provides milk, and the skins
can be used for leather like material.

Giani:
A large mammal of solitary habits
which inhabits the rainforests inland
of Schendi. They are normally cat-sized
panthers, not dangerious to man

Giant Tarsk:
cousin of the smaller tarsk,
stands 10 hands high at the shoulder.

Ground Urt:
A small rodent which inhabits the floor
of the rainforests inland of Schendi

Hith:
A large, python like snake

Hurt:
kangaroo like animal, the fur is wool
like used for clothing.

Jit monkey:
Lives in the Schendi rainforests.

Jungle Larl:
Less dangerous to man, than the northern larl,
inhabitant of the rainforest.

Jungle Vart:
A relative of the northern vart, it
inhabits the rainforests inland of Schendi

Kaiila:
an animal like the velociraptor,
20-22 hands high, very fast and
carneverous, very vicious from birth,
covered with silky fur, eyes have 3 lids
to protect it from blowing sands.

Kailiauk:
Heavy ruminant, tawny with markings
of red and brown on its haunches, 3 horns,
20-25 hands at shoulder.

Larl:
A large (7 ft. at shoulder) feline, tawny red
or black in color, having a black mane;
carnivorous; similar to a lion.

Leaf Urt:
A small tree-dwelling rodent, having
4 toes, which inhabits the rainforests
inland of Schendi. Similar to the tree sloth

Leem:
a small arctic rodent, five to ten ounces
in weight, hybernates in the winter.
It's furs are sold by the Red Hunters

Ost:
Small snake, about 12" long, bright orange
color; its' venom causes extremely painful
death within seconds; a type living in the
rainforests inland of Schendi are red with
black stripes.

Panther, jungle:
Less dangerous to man, than the northern
variety, inhabitant of the rainforest.

Quala:
Small, tan colored, 3-toed mammal with a stiff,
brushy mane of black hair.

Racing Tarns:
Slender, lighter birds bred for speed and
endurance. Racing Tarns are used by
messengers.

River Tharlarion:
Extremely large, herbivorous, web-footed
lizards used by bargemen of the Cartius
River to pull barges

Rock Tharlarion:
A small reptile of the Tahari.

Slee:
A rodent which lives in the rainforests inland
of Schendi

Sleen:
The deadly hunting dog of Gor..a mix of
a weasel and a Komodo drag, furry, with
fangs that drip a deadly poison. With 6 legs
and tencious they can track a trail days old
as if it were fresh..rending and killing the
object of the hunt. Sleen are pack animals
and cared for only by thier Masters so that
they are not befriended by the slave who
may try to escape.

Tabuk:
similar to the goat or gazelle,
they are quick. There are more than 20 types
of this animal found in the rainforests.
Their sweet meat is roasted.

Tarn:
Enormous relatives of the earth Golden eagle.
with up to a 50' wing span..they are bred
in 2 types, as follows:

Tarsiers:
Large, swift beasts, at the shoulders,
40 hands tall. Warm blooded reptiles, they
are used in battle and a smaller bred cousin
as draft animals on Gor. The Marsh Thalarion
is not domesticated, but a vicious hunter.

Tarsk:
similar to a pig, being carrion eaters,
the meat is not a favorite. A staple
among rence growers, Tarsk can be roasted.

Tharlarion:
The large, slow tharlarion are used
as draft animals and are plant eaters.

Tharlarion, high:
Agile tharlarion used as a mount for riding;
They have very short, almost useless, front
legs; carnivorous similar to the
tyrannasaurus rex.

Tree Urt:
A small tree-climbing rodent found
in the rainforests inland of Schendi

Tumits:
Hunted with bolos, this large
carniverous bird lives on the plains
and is hunted by the Nomads.

Two-stomached snow lart:
A mammalian animal with four legs,
that is about 10" high, and weighs
between 8-12 lbs. It hunts in the sun.
The food in the second stomach can be
held almost indefinitely. It is filled
in the fall and lasts the lart
through the winter night, which lasts
months. It eats bird's legs and preys
on the leem

Urt:
Think of a reptilian rat..the size of a
terrier urt, a small, silken-furred rodent
akin to the Earth rat; it has three
rows of teeth, two tusks, and two horns

Vart:
Blind, bat-like flying rodent, about
the size of a small dog.

Verr
A mountain goat indigenious to the Voltai. Wild, agile, ill tempered, long hair, spiral horned. *Priest-Kings of Gor, pg 63*
Vulo:
a small pigeon like bird, can be
roasted or baked in spices.

War Tarns:
heavier but agile, trained to aid in battle.

Zeder:
A small, sleen-like, carnivorous
mammal which inhabits the rainforests
inland of Schendi, esp. along the Ua
River; grows to c. 2' and weighs 8-10
lbs; is diurnal, can swim very well,
and builds a stick and mud nest in the
branches of a tree, where it spends the
night.

INSECTS

GOLDEN BEETLE:
An insect, roughly the size of a
rhinoceros, which lives in the
caverns below the Nest of the
Priest-Kings in the Sardar Mountains;
its prey is the Priest Kings themselves.

HINTI:
Small, flea-like insects; unlike fleas,
They are not parasites.

NEEDLE OR STING FLIES:
Originate in the delta, and similar
Places. It's sting is extremely
painful, but it is usually not
dangerous, unless inflicted in great
numbers.

SLIME WORM:
A long, slow, blind worm which
inhabits the caverns below the Nest
in the Sardar; scavenges the remains
of the Golden Beetles kills.

STING OR NEEDLE FLIES:
Originate in the delta, and similar
Places. It's sting is extremely
painful, but it is usually not
dangerous, unless inflicted in great
numbers.

ZARLIT:
The zarlit fly is very large, about
two feet long, with four large,
translucent wings, with a span of
about a yard. It has large, padlike
feet on which, when it alights, it
can rest on the water, or pick its
way delicately across the surface.
Most of them are purple. Their
appearance is rather formidable
and can one a nasty turn in the
delta, but happily, one soon learns
they are harmless, at least to humans.

MARINE LIFE

BALEEN WHALE:
Bluish bunt finned whale, often
hunted by the Red Hunters.

BINT:
Small carnivorous freshwater
fish which inhabits the rivers
of the rainforests inland of
Schendi; a large school of
bints can strip a carcass in
minutes; similar to the piranha
of Earth.

BLUE GRUNT:
A small, voracious, carnivorous
freshwater fish, related to the
Thassa grunt; like its larger
cousin, it is attracted by blood.

DOCK EEL:
A black freshwater fish, 4' long
and weighing 8-10 lbs.; carnivorous;
they inhabit the shallow waters
around the dock and wharves of river
ports.

GIANT GINT:
A large cousin of the gint found
in western Gor, similar in appearance,
but with a 4-spined dorsal fin; is
also amphibious and capable of walking
on its pectoral fins.

GINT:
A tiny (6") freshwater fish which
inhabits the rivers of the rain
forests inland of Schendi; it has
bulbous eyes and flipper-like fins;
is amphibious, having both lungs
and gills; is capable of walking on
its pectoral fins; often found in
the comp any of tharlarion, feeding off the
scraps of their kills.

GRUNT:
A large, carnivorous, salt-water
fish which inhabits Thassa; is
often attracted by the blood of
a wounded creature; similar to
the shark of Earth.

HUNJER WHALE:
large black, toothed whale which
is hunted by the Red Hunters.

LELT:
A small (5-7") blindfish with
fernlike filaments at either
side of the head which are
its sensory organs; white, with
long fins, it parsit fish a
silvery fish having brown stripes.

MAMBA:
Large, predatory river tharlarion
which inhabits the rivers of the
rainforests inland of Schendi;
they have long, log-like bodies,
with short, powerful legs and a
long snout and tail; similar to
Earth crocodiles.

MARINE SAURIAN:
Fish-like but reptilian, more
than 20 ft in length.

MARSH SHARK:
Deadly fresh water hunter of
the Gorean Marshes.. similar
in shape to the shark of earth.

RIVER SHARK:
A narrow, black, vicious,
carnivorous fish with a
triangular dorsal fin, which
inhabits the rivers of Gor.

SALT SHARK:
A long-bodied (12' or more)
carnivorous fish having gills
situated under the jaw, several
rows of triangular teeth, a
sickle-like tail, and a sail-like dorsal
fin; inhabits brine pits such
as those of the Tahari.

SEA SLEEN:
long, sleek, mammal with flippers
and six legs, and double fanged
jaws, can weigh as much as 1000
pounds.. and as much as 20 feet
in length, hunted by the Red
Hunters for food and pelt.

SORP:
A shellfish, common esp. in the
Vosk river, similar to an oyster;
like an oyster, it manufactures pearls.

VOSK SORP:
A giant clam...that thrives in the
seas and Marshes of Gor...the shell
of which is large enough to be used
as a throne.

WINGFISH:
Small blue salt-water fish with 4
poisonous spines on its dorsal fin
which lives in the waters off Port
Kar; its liver is considered a
delicacy in Turia.
