DANANG
We flew into Danang, as part
of our desperate quest to get to Hoi An, or was that a desperate quest
to get out of HCMC. I don't really have much to tell you about Danang.
My bag almost got sent on to Hong Kong, I had to argue with the Vietnamese
official to convince him that I was positive my bag was not on the
carousel, and seeing as how there was no more luggage left on it, I really
didn't feel it was going to show up anytime soon.
We stayed here long enough
to go to Christmas Mass at the famous? Danang Cathedral, visit the Champa
museum, and eat at this restaurant. This
hole in the wall was recommended by the lp which mentioned that it
had excellent banh cuon. Not knowing what the hell that specialty
was, we decided to check out the place. Only later did we find out that
the secret ingredient in the sauce, that gives it "a flowery aroma and
pearlike taste", was none other than a filtered extract from insect semen.
I guess what you don't know can't hurt you. Eating at that restaurant was
rather comical they didnt really speak English at all, so they ended up
calling a woman from a shop down the street who was studying French, and
through her we managed to order food and drinks.
