The Sun Kachina (Taawakatsina) with his radiating eagle
feathers and distinctive facial pattern is perhaps the most widely known
Hopi kachina. He carries a rattle in his right hand and a ceremonial "flute" (not an actual flute) representing a flower blossom in the left hand. The Sun Kachina image frequently appears on Hopi baskets
and jewelry and in paintings. The book in which this painting by Hopi artist Cliff Bahnimptewa appears is widely used as a reference by present-day kachina doll carvers.
