Schistose and mostly composed of biotite, muscovite and quartz. Sometimes contains green chloride or garnets or staurolite and kyanite..

Colour: 
Streaky, silver, black, white and green.

Texture and granularity: 
Schistose with mineral grains that are platy and aligned.

Field associations: 
Zones of contact or regional matemorphism.

Varieties:
Greenschist, mica schist, garnet mica schist, staurolite-kyanite schist, and amphibolite schist..
