Grassland Zones (nb not community types) for Xilingol Aimag, shown with mean annual precipitation interpolated from meteorologial station data for at least 30 years. White boxes indicate the selected training areas. The grassland zone boundaries were determined by Professor Yong Shi Peng (Inner Mongolia Normal University Natural Resources Institute), using 1.1km AVHRR data.

* this is a transitional zone, or ecotone; parts of the Stipa krylovii typical steppe zone have experienced extensive degradation with invasion of large areas in the south of the northern part by Neopallasia pectinata (Chinese : biche hao).
