Light is essential to healthy plants. Without it, plants cannot produce food and will therefore die quickly. Flowering plants
especially need good light. However, it isn't difficult to give plants the light they need. Almost all houseplants will
thrive if given bright, but indirect sun. An eastern window is optimal for most houseplants. Some plants, such as crotons
and palms, prefer even more sun, but will still do well in bright, indirect light.
Other plants can do well even in relatively shady areas. Ficus elastica, or rubber tree plants, can take a fair amount of shade
and still do well.
There are plants that will do well in almost any window exposure. While an eastern window is probably just about the best
(especially for picky plants like African violets), you can find a plant that will do well in any place in your house, assuming
there is some light. However, if you are just starting out, it's not advisable to try to grow high maintenance plants that
require specific situations to thrive. There are so many plants out there that it is much preferable to find one that WILL thrive
in your situation. You'll be happy because you have happy, healthy plants, and your plants will be happy because they are receiving the right
kind of light.
