Poaching and loss of the rainforest habitat are fast endangering some of the world's primates-gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutan-commonly known as the great apes.
"Orang" and "utan" are the Malay words for "man" and "jungle." The literal meaning of the name is "man of the jungle."
Social grooming can relax a gorilla to the point that it will go into a trance.

Chimpanzee Chimpanzees' are 4.5-5.5 feet. The weigh 100-175 pounds. Their lifespan is 40-50 years old. They live in Africa, from Guinea to western Uganda and Tanzania, in forest and savannah areas. They live in troops of 25-80. They are in these big groups for protection.
Fruits of all kinds make up most of there diet. It will eat bugs and honey. It also hunts, kills, and feeds other mammals, such as colobus monkeys, blue monkey, and baboon. They kill by an adult male smashing the animal's head on the ground. The male then eats his fill and then stares the rest.
Gorillas Male gorilla's are 6 feet and can get up to 600 lbs. Females are 5 feet and can go up to 200 lbs. The mountain gorillas are found in Virungo Volcanoes in the highlands of eastern Zaire. Lowland gorillas live in forest areas, stretching from the northern bank of Zaire River to the Ubangai River in southern Nigeria.
Gorilla's are herbivorous, or plant eating. It eats fruit, leaves, and stems of a wide variety of plants that form the undergrowth of the forest floor. Bamboos are a favorite. When a they drink it soaks the back of its hand and sucks the water from the fur.
Orangutans Orangutans are small. Males are 4 feet and weigh 130-200 lds. Females are 3 feet and weigh 90-110 lds. They are restricted to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They like living alone. It is very normal to find 2 or 3 of these intelligetn primates per square mile of the jungle.
There diet is fruits, nuts, leaves, bark, insects, and eggs.When food supply in a ares is plentiful, an orangutan may remain in one place for a period of time to feed.
