Two Early Homebuilts.

My first guitar, built in the early 60's while I was in High School.

It was styled after an Australian guitar of the time made by   Maton.

The wood was radiata pine, shaped with handtools such as a fretsaw and wood rasps.

The neck was bolted to the body. It was also cut from pine and stained with spirit wood stain. The finish was a clear finish applied with a paint brush.

Fret placement was measured from another electric guitar.   Frets were installed by cutting a groove shaped like an inverted vee, and sliding the fretwire in from the side. (At the time I had no idea how they were normally installed).  This was a time consuming job at the time but it sure makes fret replacement easier.

My second guitar, built in the 60's not long after the first.

It was styled after Paul McCartney's Hofner Bass.

The wood was radiata pine, and this time I had the body cut out with a band saw.

Construction was as for the first.   The scratchplate is made from stained ply.  The white binding on the body and scratchplate is painted on.  Fret markers are squares of white plastic sticky tape.

Single pickup and bridge have gone missing over the years.
