Hyacinth Vase
Growing a hyacinth flower by sitting the bulb on top of a vase of water is
a novel way to enjoy these beautifully fragrant blooms. This process can be
started any time during the normal planting period for Spring flowering bulbs
(February until May).
- Start with the vases especially designed for Hyacinth growing
- Only use large, plump Hyacinth bulbs. This is important for two reasons:
- The bulb needs to be able to sit in the neck of the vase without
falling into the water below;
- The bulb requires lots of pre-stored energy to produce a flower
in this manner and therefore has to be strong & vigorous. (Size is a good
indicator of these qualities in a Hyacinth bulb)
- Fill the jar with water so that it will sit just below the base of the
bulb once the bulb is placed (point upward) in the neck of the vase. Place
the bulb on top.
- Place the vase in a cool and dark spot such as in a cool shed or in a
dark cupboard at approximately 9 degrees celsius. Leave the vase there
until the bulb's roots have mostly filled the vase and the flower spike is
about 5cm tall. This usually takes about 2.5 months. At all times ensure
that the water level stays just below the bulb's base.
- Gradually move the vase into a lighter position by firstly moving it
into a dull, cool room and leaving it there for a couple of days. Over a
couple of moves, gradually introduce the vase into normal household
conditions & enjoy.
- For a longer flower life, avoid leaving the vase in hot spots like the
window sill.
- Once the flower has finished, throw the bulb away since will be too
exhausted to flower again. The vase can be used again next year with a new
bulb or use as a normal vase.
