Species Gladioli
Botanical name: Gladiolus sp.
Family: Iridaceae
Plant/bulb type: Corm
Planting time: Late Summer to Autumn
Height: 35 - 45 cm (some var. to 70cm)
Depth & spacing: 10-15cm deep and 8-10cm apart.
Aspect: Full sun.
Soil: Well drained is ideal but gladioli are very tolerant of a wide range of soils.
Watering: Start watering when growth appears and keep soil slightly moist until foliage dies off after flowering. It is ideal to keep bulbs relatively dry whilst dormant.
Fertilising: Top dress with a complete fertiliser each Autumn. Eg: Blood & Bone.
Flowering: Late Spring - early Summer
After flowering care: These bulbs can be left to naturalise. If you wish
to dig the bulbs to move or divide them, wait until the foliage yellows after
flowering & cut the foliage to 5-10cm long. Ensure the bulbs are dry before storing
in loose bags until replanting next Autumn.
Comments: Beautiful, easy care flowers that are delicate and not much like
their more commonly known relatives.
