This is going to be a constantly changing area dedicated to opinions from a wide number of topics. Some of the topics I'll make up, some of them will come from you, and some may come from the headlines. Here's how it works: I will post an issue and if you feel moved to make a comment about it, then e-mail me. In the e-mail feel free to state your opinion honestly, and openly. I will then post your opinion here for others to read, and either add too, or comment on. The only editing I will make is to remove your name, if you wish, and to make sure that it's -G- rated. I wish for everyone to enjoy my site. When I feel an issue has become exhausted, of when comments quit comming in, then I will post a new topic and we'll begin again.
Things have changed a little (I told you they would). I am now hosting a Bulletin Board at Delphi. This should keep things more alive, and interactive. It will also make it easier for everyone to carry on more in depth conversations on the topic. I have added a Feedback area to the BB in order for you to send me any topic ideas, feedback, or general comments. I hope you enjoy the BB. Feel free to still send E-mail if you wish. Click the link below to get to the BB. It should open in a new window, so you can close it when you are done and be back here.
E-mailing me: When e-mailing your posts to me, use the button at either the top, or the bottom of the page. Include a name or a handle that you might like included in your post, and where you are in the world. City, and State, or Country if outside the U.S. The where is mostly cause I'd like to know if people in certain areas think alike. When sending in ideas for topics remember that this site is trying to focus on the Earth. So try to phrase your ideas accordingly. The Earth is a huge place with a great many topics, so this shouldn't be hard.
What is world population and why should we be concerned? World population: the population of the entire world. Why be concerned? Aren't we running out of space? China certainly is. The law in China states that you may have only one child. If you try to have more, the baby will either be aborted (by the State), or be killed after birth. This may help crowd control, but China now has another HUGE problem. Many of its citizens feel that male children are more valuable than female children. When a couple finds out that they are having a girl, many times the baby is aborted, killed, or abandoned. There are many black market abortion clinics, and many would- be mothers are dying from unsanitary practices at the hands of people not qualified to perform these operations. I have spoken with many people who feel "overpopulation" is not just a problem in China. They say things like "I don't think AIDS is a problem. It's just nature's way of crowd control". Or similar things about tobacco. Yeah, so what if almost 300,000 people a year die from tobacco, how would we feed all those people? Where would we keep them? There's already a space shortage! Ever try to find a nice apartment or house? Do you think we need things like the Chinese? Should we have a maximum children limit? If so, what should the limit be? What about mandatory birth control? What do we do with people who don't comply? This is America right?
Author/Webmaster's view:
No, we shouldn't be concerned. Why? Take a look at a state like Idaho. The entire population of Idaho is 1,006,749 (1990), or about 12 persons per square mile. Then let's take a look at a smaller state, New York. New York has a population of 17,990,455 (1990). Nearly 18 million people in only 53,000 square miles, or more than 30 times as densely populated as Idaho. I think we have plenty of space. Feeding more and more people may become a problem though. I think though with better usage of space, and putting our "tech" people to work, we could produce many times over the crops we produce now. I know it doesn't help China, but one thing at a time...
