African Herpetofaunal Biodiversity Programme

POSSIBLE SUB-PROGRAMMES FOR THE AHBP
These may be necessary to focus specific workers on the particular geographic, taxonomic or biological fields of expertise. These could involve particular regions such as East Africa, West Africa, Malagasy, South Africa and North Africa. Also workers may want to specialise in snakes or lizards, a genus of frogs or even a single species such as the Nile crocodile. Others may be concerned with field surveys, mapping (GIS), conservation threats and priorities, trade, ecology, biogeography, parasitology, sustainable use or captive breeding. All of these aspects are important for the AHBP and will need to be taken into account in the programme initiatives.
One suggestion has been for the compilation of a multi-author loose-leaf catalogue of the African herpetofauna such as has been undertaken for the North American herpetofauna. Species lists for each country would be a priority as would a list of all threatened species. These are all items which can be discussed and resolved using the AFRIHERP-L list-server to enable open communication between collaborators. Those without direct Internet access can communicate their particular concerns and interests to the list manager (Lynn Raw) who will forward them to the other participants.
