International Chameleon
Working Group
(ICWG)

What is the ICWG?

An informal group (over 60 individuals and organisations from 12 countries) interested in various aspects of chameleon biology and conservation.

When did the ICWG start?

The ICWG was established in 1992.

What are the aims of the ICWG?

The ICWG has the following aims:-

-To promote the exchange of information relative to chameleons
-To encourage taxonomic and systematic research on chameleons
- To encourage biogeographical and ecological research on chameleons
- To promote the conservation of chameleons
- To encourage research into captive propagation, husbandry and ethology of chameleons
- To promote conservation education relating to chameleons

Does the ICWG publish a newsletter or journal?

Yes, the ICWG has a newsletter, The Chameleon. At this time 5 issues have been produced as follows:-

Volume 1

No. 1 - Aug 1992 contents - 1(1)
No. 2 - Feb 1993 contents - 1(2)
No. 3 - Jul 1993 contents - 1(3)
No. 4 - Nov 1993 contents - 1(4)
No. 5/6 - May 1997 contents - 1(5/6)

Issues of the newsletter depend on the supply of sufficient material to produce each issue. Since the purpose of the newsletter is the dissemination of information on chameleons to, for and by ICWG members, we welcome contributions in any form, even previously published information which is otherwise difficult to obtain. We also accept articles and other contributions from non-members if they are otherwise consistent with the ICWG aims.

Are there any costs for membership?

Actually, there are no membership fees as such but there are subscription fees for the newsletter to cover production and mailing costs.

Previously, the ICWG charged US$10 for the 1st three issues of the newsletter and US$10 for the 2nd two issues.
The newsletter costs were partially subsidised in the past since expenditure exceeded income but this is no longer possible.

Are back issues of the newsletter available and what do they cost?

Demand for copies of issues 1 - 4 outstripped the original supply and additional copies had to be produced. Due to the limited number of copies produced it is likely that these issues could become collectors' items in the future, perhaps a valuable investment for some? Please contact the editor for details of current availability.

How can I contact the ICWG?
