Witness

such youth, such horror
you speak of the world’s insanity
an enslaved employee of Death’s factory
so far from those who boasted their humanity,
you bear witness to an atrocity some refute.

The naked souls shuffled
cleansed not with water, but
the technically wonderful Zyklon B

You could only wonder at the horror scene -
the struggle for life, its results
you could not care too much, lest you catch it,
the panic that built a monument so obscene.

No one could envy your sorrow
as you recount the destruction of so many.
Witness to unspeakable intolerance and cruelty
a unique chapter, though sadly one of many,
you remind us of our forgotten moral duty.

shovelling your family into a ditch
is only a word unspoken away.
